About 60 runners representing Peace and Dignity Journeys 1992 will reach Lordsburg Sunday evening. Three groups set out simultaneously to cover the route and unite for the event.
Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts an open sight muzzleloader shoot this Sunday August 23 at 10:00 am with heats at 50 100 and 150 yards. Winners take half the heat cash while the rest funds the annual 22 cal Optimist Youth silhouette shoot for Hidalgo County youths ages 8 to 18 with nine trophies and free ammo. Spectators welcome and community donations assist 250 runners from 40 indigenous nations camping at the National Guard Armory.
City Superintendent Alex DeLaGarza and Marvin Cooper attended a week long Landfill Operations Training Certification in Albuquerque from August 17 to 21. They will certify in solid waste management, learn site selection, design requirements, inspections, landfill closure, and federal and state regulations, plus a field exercise on landfill economics. City Clerk Irene Galvan notes the certification is required by the Solid Waste Act.
City officials welcome Hidalgo County residents and students returning to class. Drivers are urged to slow in school zones as crews repaint crossings. Community fun is encouraged with the Hidalgo County Fair slated for August 28 to 30. Signed Salvador Diaz Jr. mayor.

Governor Bruce King proclaims Saturday August 22 as Homeless Animal Day urging New Mexico pet owners to spay and neuter to reduce shelter euthanasia. The document highlights millions of dogs and cats killed yearly and calls for responsible ownership and awareness of pet laws.
Plans are underway for the Gem and Mineral Show from February 18 to March 10, 1993, announced by club spokesman Bill Langham. The local club will distribute flyers at state welcome centers and nationwide, with show materials already in Ohio and North Carolina. Langham notes progress includes a roof financed by local donors and civic groups, and aims to attract both members and visitors to Lordsburg as the facility is completed.
