Bill Mitchell Named Playas Smelter Superintendent

Bill Mitchell of Playas is named Hidalgo Smelter Superintendent effective September 1. He replaces Bill Champion, who moves to Chino Mines Company in Hurley as manager. Mitchell joined in 1985 as Senior Process Engineer and rose to Technical Services Department Head in 1987. He led the 240-person Operations group since 1989, overseeing multiple plant units and support groups.

Statesman bids for Lordsburg airport lease as council weighs terms

Charles Statesman presented qualifications and plans to lease Lordsburg Municipal Airport, seeking a five year contract instead of three. He touted 35 years aviation experience, maintenance and inspection services, fuel sales, flight training, charter work, avionics service, and community aviation events. Current operation base listed as Bowie, Arizona, while officials review rate calculations and consult City Attorney Rick Sherman before a decision.

Velasquez Named New Lordsburg High Coach and AD

David Velasquez 32 of Santa Rosa is the new head basketball coach physical education instructor and athletic director at Lordsburg High School replacing Lyman Stough who moves to Morenci. Velasquez led Santa Rosa JV and assistant teams for eight years with four state tournament appearances and one state title. He is a University of New Mexico graduate with further graduate study at Highlands University. The Hidalgo Employees Association picnic is Sunday 1 to 7 PM at Playas Park Pool with games prizes sodas and hamburgers.

Leah Ogrewalla a longtime Centerville Utah resident died July 27 after a long illness She was born March 13 1916 in Hachita New Mexico to Aaron C and Wynona Pierce Gruwell She served an LDS mission in 1939 1940 worked as a Link Trainer for the Air Force at Kirtland and was an airplane pilot She married Kenneth C Ogrewalla March 8 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple She is survived by her husband six children 21 grandchildren and 4 great granddaughters Funeral services were held Saturday August 1 at the Centerville Stake Center with burial in Centerville City Cemetery Attendees from Lordsburg included John Gruwell Helen G Hadlock Robyn Marquez Many & Aaron Wayman and June and Allen Hill

McPherson Seeks Credentials at GOP convention

Hidalgo County Republican Chairman Mac McPherson and his wife Cordelia left Thursday to attend the Republican National Convention in Houston August 17 to 20. He led in votes at the State Republican Convention in Albuquerque and may join the Republican Credentials Committee before the convention. He also runs as Republican candidate for State Representative District 39 serving Hidalgo and part of Grant County. CORRECTION: Mavericks football opener moved to Thursday August 27. Lordsburg School staff luncheon moved to Tuesday August 18 at 11 AM.

Sheriff Hall Reports To Commission

Sheriff Bob Hall told Hidalgo County Commissioners about progress since September 1992. Federal Standards upgrades allowed housing of Federal prisoners locally, generating $216,700 gross from Federal Prisoners Program in 12 months with $60,982.96 in expenditures leaving $144,717.04 added to the general fund. Commissioner Joe Burgess conducted a semi annual jail inspection and gave a favorable report on improvements since the last inspection.
