Bill Mitchell Named Playas Smelter Superintendent
Bill Mitchell of Playas is named Hidalgo Smelter Superintendent effective September 1. He replaces Bill Champion, who moves to Chino Mines Company in Hurley as manager. Mitchell joined in 1985 as Senior Process Engineer and rose to Technical Services Department Head in 1987. David Velasquez 32 of Santa Rosa is the new head basketball coach physical education instructor and athletic director at Lordsburg High School replacing Lyman Stough who moves to Morenci. Velasquez led Santa Rosa JV and assistant teams for eight years with four state tournament appearances and one state title. He is a University of New Mexico graduate with further graduate study at Highlands University. Hidalgo County Republican Chairman Mac McPherson and his wife Cordelia left Thursday to attend the Republican National Convention in Houston August 17 to 20. He led in votes at the State Republican Convention in Albuquerque and may join the Republican Credentials Committee before the convention.
