Hills Are Fair Parade Marshals Named for 1993 Hidalgo County

The Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce selects Allen and June Hill as the 1993 Hidalgo County Fair Parade Marshals. Both lifelong residents of Hidalgo County with deep local ties, the Hills have served in the armed forces, supported the Lordsburg community, and volunteered with schools and a planned county museum. JoAnna Lopez notes their long list of contributions led to the nomination by the Chamber board.

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Fair Parade Seeks Participants

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce led by Joanna Lopez invites floats bicycles bands and other entries for the county fair parade with no entry fee rosettes and ribbons for winners. A concurrent horseshoe tournament directed by Doug Houser at the Elks Lodge on Saturday August 28 offers $ prizes with registration at 9:00 AM and pitching at 10:00 AM.

1993 Hidalgo County Fair Queen Alysha Massey of Animas

Alysha Massey, 17, daughter of Ricky and Bobby Massey of Animas, was chosen as the 1993 Hidalgo County Fair Queen at the Tuesday contestant ceremony. She is a senior at Animas High School active in FFA, volleyball, basketball, and National Honor Society with ten years in 4-H. The Queen's Court includes Elisa Wright, 14, and Rachel Wright, with Lia Shay Hatch and Kelcie Orphey as Princess and Little Miss Hidalgo County respectively. Dawn Conover and Michele Coogan placed as runners up. judges were Donna Irwin and John and Candy Sweetzer from Luna County.

Early Childhood Special Education Program Screening in Lordsburg

Lordsburg Municipal Schools offer an Early Childhood Special Education screening at Central Elementary on August 24. The program serves children who will be at least three in 1993 but not yet eligible for kindergarten, addressing disabilities in intellectual, language, motor, social-emotional or self-help areas. Early intervention aims to lessen handicapping effects and support families.

Cookoff contestants must register by next Wednesday

Local Hidalgo County Chili Cookoff calls for county chefs to enter by 3:00 PM August 25 at Inch By Inch. Contestants supply their own gear, cook one gallon of true chili per rules of the International Chili Society, and pay a $10 entry fee per division. The event runs 8 AM August 28 at the 42nd Hidalgo County Fair. Connie Corbell can supply forms and details.

Lordsbury Optimist Club Youth Silhouette Shoot Saturday

The Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts its annual youth silhouette shoot on Saturday Aug 21 sign up at 10:00 a.m. at Todd Beasley Range two miles south on Main St open to youths 8 to 18 in three divisions with three trophies each. Ammunition provided but no cost to enter and strict safety rules govern gun use and conduct.

Lordsburg's Pyramid Village marks its twentieth birthday amid a history of funding delays and revival. Ex mayor Alan Koff spearheaded a $1.25 million low income village designed for 4.9 residents per acre, well below the national average. Plans included 100 housing units, a three acre park, fields and a community center, with rents around $40 a month in 1973.

Hidalgo County Horse Show Scheduled for Saturday

The Hidalgo County Horse Show will be held on Saturday, August 21, 1993, at the Hidalgo County Fair Grounds. Entries open at 8:00 a.m. with a five dollar entry fee per class. Open Halter and open youth classes feature Booster, Novice, Junior, and Senior divisions. Grand Champions win trophies and high-point buckles are awarded by age group.
