Sees Ready To Begin Duties By JOHN SCHIMMEL Maverick football prepares for a new season with equipment issued and early practices. New faces include Lees: Vance Lee as principal and Travis Lee as head coach, both experienced coaches. Travis aims to adapt players to a new offense and a two week away opener at Duncan on August 31. A freshman team is planned to bridge junior and senior high, with future benefits expected from closer program coordination.

Chile Cookoff Participants Meet Saturday

Participants planning to enter the Chile Cookoff Competition at the Hidalgo County Fair weekend meet at the Chamber of Commerce. The meeting is set for Friday August 17 at 10:00 at the Chamber office.

Lordsburg Welcomes Center Dedication at Oasis in Desert

The Lordsburg Welcome Center, dubbed Oasis in the Desert, holds its official inaugural on Wednesday August 22 at 11 a.m. The 17 acre west I-10 site was approved after a 27 month push by Louis Whitlock chairing the State Highway Commission. The new $1,000,000 complex at the rest area will house an informational center run with the New Mexico Commerce and Industry Department, aiming to attract passing tourists.

C Of C Members Ready For Center Opening

Two Chamber of Commerce meetings finalized plans for the New Mexico Tourist Center dedication set for Wednesday August 22 at 11 00 a m at the center site west of Lordsburg. Dignitaries from the Governor s office State Highway Commission and Economic Development Commission will attend with sessions Tuesday to Thursday and a luncheon follows the ceremony. County Manager Tommy Anderson reported developments and offered county manpower for shuttling materials during preparations and presented a three day activity agenda. Quotes were requested for T shirts and caps to promote the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce.

Shrimp Farming Film Shown To Hidalgo Commissioners

Hidalgo County Commissioners viewed a slide show on Israeli freshwater shrimp farming led by Farrell Eldridge of Hidalgo Energy Enterprises. He said Israel has 10 000 acres of shrimp farms using solar heating and eyeing geothermal energy in Hidalgo. Governor Anaya joined the trip and praised the project. Two potential farm sites have Israeli water quality approval. A feasibility study is underway and marketing targets the west coast. Local feeding plans are noted.

County School Meal Plans Announced by Education Board

Local Officers Arrest Couple in Bribery Attempt

Ron­ald Bohne and Shirley Bohne were arrested after allegedly plotting to bribe a Hidalgo County official to obtain a death certificate and other records to fake Ronald Bohne’s death. Ronald, 44, and Shirley, 42, faced charges of bribery, criminal solicitation, and conspiracy as they were stopped on I-10 near Lordsburg.
