Lordsburg School Board Names New Elementary Principal

Howard Brunje was appointed elementary principal at Lordsburg Schools, replacing Gilbert Candelaria, during the regular meeting. Superintendent DeFoor also recommended Travis Lee as physical education head coach, replacing Jerry Reyes who resigned July 16. The board accepted resignations from Denise McNutt and Rafael Ascosta, and approved several new staff including Carmen Chaires, Bobby Ponder, Kathy Lee, Jackie Kotter, Bill Gilliland, and Carmen Terrazas transfer. Non certified hires included Irman Diaz, Jo Guerra, and Olga Chacon. Renovation plans for the high school gym floor were discussed with a recommendation to replace the entire floor. Board authorized Wilson and Co. to document and evaluate district facilities. Per diem and travel rates were updated. School asbestos work and gas refund eligibility were reviewed. Milk service bids were received from Bordens and Price’s, with final action awarded to E.F. Hutton Insurance to notify staff of benefits.

Welcome Center Dedication Set For August 22

Lordsburg Welcome Center on I-10 is set for dedication at 11 a.m. on August 22 with multiple government meetings planned around the event. New Mexico officials from Economic Development and Tourism and the Highway Department will convene at the Civic Center and nearby venues, with receptions hosted by local groups and dignitaries from Four County area expected to attend. Governor Anaya may attend, while addressing attendees at a luncheon.

Aspiring Athletes Must Take Physicals

Lordsburg High School requires all male athletes to have physicals for participation. Examinations run Wednesday to Friday August 8 9 10 at Hidalgo Medical Services for a $5 fee by Dr. Charles Maynard. Parents receive the Athletic Code and forms. first day of practice requires signed returns. Varsity and JV football begin Monday August 13 1984 with an 8:30 a.m. team meeting and 4:00 p.m. practice, two-a-days through August 18.

City Corner announces range, derby, and gazebo progress

The city plans to complete rifle and pistol ranges by October 6 and 7 for the Optimist Shooting Tournament with a traveling trophy for team shooting and separate individual matches. The Soap Box Derby will occur that date, gazebo near North Park advances for St. Joseph's Church bazaar, and Santa Fe reports a $10,000 grant for new softball lights with a formal letter due in two months. St Josephs Bazaar at North Park This Weekend

St Josephs Annual Bazaar runs Saturday and Sunday August 11 and 12 at North Park Lordsburg opening noon with a $3.50 barbecue by Angel Talavera. Booths offer balloon busts dart games penny pitch bingo and more with foods including hamburgers gorditas burritos tacos cotton candy snow cones cokes and beer. Saturday night features a dance queen candidates Connie Sanchez Kathy Myers Darlene Lopez and Larissa De La Riva. Sunday noon start continues games and food with coronation at 7 pm and a tardeada with live music. Grand draws include 25 color chainsaw and $100 third prize with $1 tickets sold both days.

Center Closed For Civic Center Cleaning

Lucy Lopez, director of the Civic Center, announces closure from August 6 to August 16 for floor and carpet cleaning. Those wishing to use the center must contact Mrs Lopez at City Hall.

Lordsburg Honors Todd Bensley Day With Balloon Fly In

Hundreds turn out in Lordsburg on August 4 1984 to honor Olympian Todd Bensley. The town mobilized locals and media across New Mexico praising a shared spirit and civic effort. A hot air balloon fly in opened the day with seven balloons joining the festivities and crews performing graceful flights over the town and countryside.

Council Hears Bill Harrison On Housing

City Council heard Bill Harrison of Region V Housing Authority present a proposal for Region V to take over Lordsburg Housing Authority management. He cited an overextended 84-85 budget, urged HUD rent-base increases, and recommended trimming staff from three to two, with Susie Kimbley to become permanent acting director.
