Hidalgo Humane Society investigators and Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies cited pony owners under New Mexico cruelty laws after viewing a corral kept pony in Ordsburg. Judge Rosa Lina Salinas gave 90 days to improve the animal's condition and to build a shelter, with officials ready to pursue further action if needed.
New Mexico's Traffic Safety Bureau notes 371 deaths in the first seven months of 1979 from traffic accidents. July alone added 52 fatal accidents and 59 deaths with 283 motor vehicle fatalities, 56 pedestrians, 30 motorcyclists, and two bicyclists. County figures show Hidalgo three, Grant five, Luna ten, and Atron three fatals through mid year.

A petition seeking a referendum to place Lordsburg utilities under state Public Service Commission control was denied. Of 214 signatures, 89 were invalid per City Clerk Lupe Rivera, leaving 125 valid signatures far below the 189 required, equal to 25 percent of last general election voters. The invalids included eight unregistered voters, two nonresidents, nine duplicate signers, and 70 signatures not matching voter records. The effort was led by a local Consortium of Natural Gas Consumers formed to protest high gas bills.

Repairs include replacing a precast deck unit railing and curbing after recent damage. Burn Construction Co. Inc., Las Cruces, won the $46,266 bid with a 60 good weather day schedule aiming for late September completion.
