Farmers Market Opens on Courthouse Lawn This Saturday

The market returns this year with Saturday sessions starting August 11 1979 at 8 30 a m on the courthouse lawn. Vendors will offer squash okra black eyed peas corn cucumbers and green beans.

Hidalgo County Refuses HRM Payment for June Services

Hidalgo County Commissioners vote unanimously to deny a 5000 payment to HRM Dallas for June hospital services and staff. Assistant DA Saucedo says HRM in default. county may counterclaim if sued. Hospital closed due to ongoing losses. other actions include ambulance purchase and potential senior citizens HQ at the hospital.

Lloyd Payne Considered for County Finance Post

Lloyd Payne, chief of administration for Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, resigns effective Aug. 17 and may seek the county finance and administration director post. He was a candidate for county manager but lost to Alex Abeyta Jr. Payne debates a teaching offer in Datil and notes the new role would oversee accounting, payroll, purchasing, data processing and federal grants.

Library Receives State Grant for Public Library

The Lordsburg Hidalgo Public Library received a State Grant in Aid check for 2338 from the New Mexico State Library to improve services and collections. Marshelen Wells heads the library. The grants program, funded by the State Legislature, totals 171000 for distribution to eligible libraries. Since 1946 the program has grown the state's public libraries from 10 to 67 and boosted local library support and staff training across New Mexico.

Hidalgo County Installs Fulltime Dog Catcher

Sheriff Gene Moore objects to a new county ordinance placing animal control duties under his office. The rule allows any officer to impound roaming dogs and requires killing dogs pursuing or harming livestock poultry or people. Moore asked for funds for a dog pound and equipment, while commissioner Veck questioned pound size and ammo needs.

Well Known County Resident Hatch Dies at Home

George Lynn Hatch known as Pop Hatch died Thursday evening August 2 at his Cotton City home after a long illness. Born January 30 1890 in Kooshaven Utah he was the ninth of fourteen children and spent early years there before moving to Col Juarez Mexico. Hatch served a Montana mission and married Maude Croft in El Paso in 1913. He rode with Pancho Villa’s army as a wagon driver, traveled with them for 30 days then moved to El Paso for Thanksgiving. In 1917 he and family moved to Virden New Mexico where he taught school and farmed for 26 years, active in civic and church work and serving on multiple boards. He was named Outstanding Farmer of the Year and held roles with Sunset Canal Board Duncan Valley Potatoes Growers Assn Federal Land Bank and school boards. He left five more children after moving to Virden. (See Hatch Page 4)
