Hidalgo County Manager Will Resign Sept 1

Hidalgo County Manager Allen Kerr resigned effective Sept 1, citing other employment. Kerr, a New Mexico State University Ag major, started in Sept 1975 and will join Pacific Western Land and Cattle Company as assistant livestock superintendent. Discussion also covered a Lordsburg medical clinic proposal with high guaranteed salaries and benefits, debated by Health Systems Agency, commissioners, and interested citizens.

Courageous youths aid teen during 11 hour cliff rescue

Scott Richins, 16, fell 60 to 80 feet at Sunny Flat Campgrounds in Chirichuana Mountains southeast of Lordsburg. Cousins David Knight and Randy Porter used shirts as shade and summoned help while Forest Service and volunteers organized a multi helicopter rescue. After two failed hoists and hours of braving rugged terrain, a third helicopter finally landed and transported Richins to Tucson Medical Center with multiple injuries.

Democrats Meet To Choose Runnels Replacement in Hidalgo

Hidalgo County Democratic Central Committee calls meeting for Monday August 18 at 7 p.m. in the County Commission Chamber to discuss filling the second district seat vacated by the death of Congressman Harold Runnels. County Chairman Maura Rico urges attendance for input on the replacement. Ms. Rice plans to attend the August 23 state central committee meeting in Grants to decide on the candidate.

School Registration Scheduled for 1980-81 Year

Registration for high school students for the 1980 81 school year will be held Wednesday August 20 at the cafetorium. Pre enrolled and new district students meet at set times 9:00 a.m. freshmen 10:00 a.m. sophomores 11:00 a.m. juniors 1:00 p.m. seniors. Bus students register 9:00 to 12:00 to catch noon bus. Classes begin regular schedule Thursday August 21.

Lordsburg Hikes Taxes Despite Mayor Koffs Objections

Lordsburg City Council adopted a supplemental gross receipts tax increase to four and a half percent with revenue allocations for police protection an industrial development fund youth programs and the general fund. Mayor Koff opposed the move and declined to preside during the vote prompting Mayor Pro Tem Steve Hill to oversee that segment. The ordinance awaits potential voter action via petition within 90 days and a possible election on disapproval.

Preliminary Murder Hearing To Continue In Gila Case

A long preliminary murder hearing for John Rizzo of Gila, held on one open murder charge related to rancher Warren Uecker's death at Pine Cienega Ranch, resumes August 18 after five witnesses. Testimony shows internal ranch factions, prior ownership shifts, and alleged ties to an aggressive group named Committee of Ten Million, with witnesses including Gene Ballinger and other stockholders.
