Robin League Opens Play With Six Teams In Round Robin

The Little League begins Monday night with six teams in regular season play. CPS meets Bishops in the opener as Gene's Shell and Service faces Sporting Goods in the nightcap. The schedule runs Monday and Wednesday with a one game finale Friday to decide first and second place and award player trophies once results are tabulated.

Reunion of 11 Descendants at Colonia Juarez Mexico

In Colonia Juarez Mexico over 200 descendants of John and Maria gathered in August for the Allen Hill family reunion. Attendees included 11 living children and numerous grandchildren from Keeler Deming Blanding Hatch Hatch Wright and others. They spent three days boating on Dublan Lake visited Indian ruins at Casa Grande and enjoyed a hamburger fry a meeting of the Shealogical society a dance and Mexican orchestra performances.

Transloading Center Opens In El Paso

Southern Pacific announces a new El Paso transloading center costing 100000 to speed freight movement. The facility will handle 25 30 incoming cars and shift loads into 70 75 outbound cars within 24 hours, enabling multi destination service to Portland San Francisco Phoenix and Los Angeles.

Las Cruces Man Held In Lordsburg Car Theft

Doise Wayne Routh of Las Cruces was arrested in Lordsburg at 9 p.m. Monday August 10 and held for Hidalgo County officers in connection with the theft of a pickup truck owned by Up-to-Date Grocery Co. of Lordsburg. He pleaded guilty before Justice of the Peace C. L. Brown and was bound over to district court with bond set at 2500 dollars. The truck was stolen Monday afternoon while left unattended behind the store and was recovered undamaged.

Fierro Wins Who's Who Contest at Liberal Office

Fierr named the right person in a Who's Who contest. Dick Robson appears in the tally with 32 wrong clues and 84 correct ones totaling 144 entries. Slips were found in envelopes and future envelopes will not be opened. The box will be placed at Kirby's Cafe this week for readers to choose their Mystery Person.

Growth in Telephone Installations Boosts Lordsburg Outlook

Growth in Lordsburg and statewide gains in telephone connections mark a strong first half of 1958. Mountain States Telephone manager Howard Ross reports a 36 telephone gain in Lordsburg exchanges and a statewide rise of over 35 percent from the prior year. He notes plans to expand statewide spending to about 18 million dollars this year to fund new dial installations in Silver City Deming Lordsburg Raton Clayton Red River Tijeras and Bloomfield with expected dial conversion in Silver City Lordsburg Deming and others by next April.

Animas Legion Meets At Cloverdale Grounds

Coronado Unit 29 of the American Legion Auxiliary of Animas held its monthly meeting at the Cloverdale picnic grounds on August 9. Mrs. Akin Youngblood resigned as treasurer and was moved to Ruidoso. Mrs. Jack Vaughan was elected treasurer. The chairman appointed by president Mrs. Buford Slover Jr. was approved. A reporting party is set for September 4. district president will be invited to the September 11 meeting. The group provided a noon meal for Legion members and helpers for cleanup ahead of the Cloverdale picnic on August 15.

Ninth Hidalgo County Fair and Rodeo kicks off Friday Sept 18 at Lordsburg with three days of events. Ed Hitson says livestock displays will be expanded, Oldtimers parade Friday morning, chamber dance Saturday, junior livestock sale by Elks No 1813, and a three day rodeo featuring calf roping team tying bull riding barrel races and more with Butler Brothers supplying stock.

Sue Ann Freeburg Chosen for Wayland A Capella Choir

Sue Ann Freeburg of Lordsbury New Mexico has been selected for Wayland Baptist College’s 47 member international A Capella choir. She will report August 31 for training ahead of the September 7 registration. The choir tours internationally and across many states, with its first appearance September 9 at the fall convocation in Wayland chapel.

Albuquerque Man Named New March of Dimes Head

Arthur L. Welsh of Keenan and Welsh was named New Mexico state chairman for the March of Dimes. Basil O’Connor praised Welsh for his past work in health and civic service as the national foundation expands its program to fight polio and other rheumatic diseases. Welsh said the appointment reflects humanitarian efforts and aims to aid 11 million Americans in New Mexico and nationwide, including 250 000 infants born yearly with birth defects.
