Local golfers plan a city links event with a mixed Schoch tournament pairing men and women to play alternating strokes. Medal round handicap entries due August 14 with a noon lunch and prizes for top finishers. An entry fee of 2.00 covers lunch. no fee for Schoch event.
The U S Highway 70 Association met in Portales New Mexico on August 7 and 8 with the chamber secretary present. Mr Hassing of Miami Oklahoma was elected president. the national office will be in Ardmore Oklahoma. The group aims to improve highways promote tourism and print foldouts sign boards and better hospitality to attract travelers to the route.
Hidalgo County schools outside Lordsburg will open Monday August 24. County Superintendent G. Lynn Hatch lists the schools and staff, with registration on Friday August 28 and actual classes starting August 31. Further information will be published next week.
July 1953 brought high heat and varied rainfall to Lordsburg. The city hit 108 degrees on July 4 at the Southern Pacific station, while eleven days recorded rain totaling 3.75 inches for the month. Mosquitoes rose despite spraying. Boy Scout Troop 120, led by K. C. Holleman, took five members to Bowie for a swimming party.
The first high school football practice will be held Monday afternoon August 17. Equipment will be given out at one o clock and practice will begin at three o'clock. Coach Goodman desires that all who plan to take part in football this fall should be present at the opening practice. High school and eighth pupils are eligible to play.
Lordsburg traveled to Clifton last Sunday and were defeated 7 to 3 by the Merchants. Despite out hitting 9 to 8, the Indians failed to capitalize on runners stranded, Guzman led with a two hits including a triple, Salaiz added a single and double, while Clifton's Salaiz, KE Hernandez, Blan, and Gonzales each had two hits. Salaiz started for Lordsburg then Madero relieved after six and one third innings. Next Sunday the Indians face the Santa Rita Miners at home.
Coach Arvel Goodman opens practice next Monday at three and anticipates a squad of 50 to 60 players with 10 lettermen. Returning lettermen include Alfonso Brito Ernesto Brito Tommy Allen Verne Payne Bill Price Don Rhoades Don McAlister Paul Diaz Bill George Pablo Sanchez. The 1953 squad should exceed 1952 in size and speed aims to offset lighter weight. Don McAlister and Pete Ruiz qualified in district hundred yard dashes last spring.
The Old Hall annual meets include a dinner and entertainment then a parade Saturday morning tied to the County Fair and Rodeo. R B Ownby urges 30 years NM residents or pre 1923 arrivals to join. Committees are named and H B Scofield promotes the parade. No entry fee. cash prizes for top entries. Theme: Spirit of the Old West.
Data from 14 and 15 year old drivers shows May 1953 accidents up 26.1 percent above the 1953 average, 54.9 percent above 1952, and 100 percent higher than May 1952. Rural area crashes account for 35.7 percent. officials urge action by administrators teachers parents and police.
Superintendent Wesley Freeburg is actively seeking furnished apartments for the upcoming school year. He urges anyone with one or more units to rent at teacher salary range to contact him promptly so incoming teachers can be accommodated.
Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce directors discussed a publicity plan used in Clovis and other towns. Randomly stopped touring parties would spend the night as guests of local businesses with free accommodations and services. Names and donors would be published in the Liberal.
Six men from Douglas Arizona met with Lordsburg City Council and Chamber directors at Hidalgo Hotel Lounge for a goodwill trip. They discussed directing more Highway 60 traffic to Douglas and promoting nearby attractions in Douglas Agua Prieta Bisbee and Tombstone. The meeting fostered mutual interest and potential collaboration.
