Collision on Salt Flats Near Lordsburg Kills and Injures
Norman G Mahnke of Ocean Side California was killed in a rear end collision with a GMC truck driven by John Brothers of Calipatria California amid a blinding dust storm on the salt flats about 16 miles southwest of Lordsburg around 40 Wednesday evening. Mrs Mahnke suffered a head cut. their two children were uninjured. Brothers and his son escaped injury. State Police attributed probable cause to excessive speed given the low visibility.

City to usher in publicity stunt to honor tourist party
The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce plans a publicity stunt starting August 21 to showcase the city to tourists. A conferring official will receive a certificate of hip ar, have his picture taken, and be named a key to the city. The party will tour the city with gasoline wash grease two free meals passes and gifts.

Local Softball Championship Called Off After Season End
The softball league committee halted remaining games as Hatch had mathematically clinched the crown. Final standings listed Hatch Mines CPS National Guard, with a Shaughnessy playoff set for the evening. Banner Mines faces Poco and Hatch faces Mines in the opening games for the title.

Band Parents Club To Elect Officers Thursday
The Band Parents Club, a key Lordsburg school group, reports over 300 members and $501.21 raised for band travel music and uniforms. Band director Roger Brandt notes strong participation and a spring 193 student concert. The first 1953 54 meeting is set for Thursday September 3 at 7 30 pm at 105 West 6th Street.

First Game Of Shaughnessy Softball Playoff Postponed
Rain halted the initial Shaughnessy softball playoff between Banner Mines Poco Hatch and CPS. Games resume tonight weather permitting with winners meeting Friday for the championship and losers playing for third place. Betty Lou George visited a former college roommate in Houston. The Cable family from North Carolina visited Miss Helen Chase and headed to the coast.

Sheriff Dick Richards Wins City Golf Tourney
Sheriff Dick Richards shot a 62 handicap to win the city men s golf tournament. Harold Wells was runner up with a 69 handicap. Fifteen men played medal play. Dudley Robertson and Jane Chase tied for low in the Scotch event which Roddy Poindexter and his daughter Joyce won the booby prize. Twelve couples entered the Scotch tournament.

One Killed One Seriously Injured In Auto Collision
An auto crash Sunday afternoon near Lordsburg left one man dead and another severely injured with four others lightly hurt. A City Laundry truck driven by Robert Shelton collided with Louis Rivas in a westbound car. Shelton was thrown into the path of a third vehicle driven by W L Burke.

The Lordsburg Indians were defeated 8 to 4 by Santa Rita on Sunday afternoon.
