Jose L. Vigil Named High School Principal

The Lordsburg Board of Education named Jose L. Vigil as principal of Lordsburg High School effective August 14, 1972. Vigil brings 16.5 years of teaching experience and broad educational training from New Mexico Highlands University New Mexico State University Colorado State College University of Colorado and the University of Minnesota. He and his wife Rafaela plan to move to Lordsburg on August 14.

Talavera Receives New Mexico Medal of Merit

SFC Angel Talavera of the New Mexico National Guard is awarded The New Mexico Medal of Merit at retirement ceremonies at Dona Ana Range Camp Fort Bliss Texas. The citation praises his fidelity, duty, adaptability and initiative over more than twenty years of service including WWII Navy service aboard USS Lunga Point and lengthy unit support at annual training and drills.

Woman Fatally Struck by Truck Near Lordsburg

A 55 year old California woman died after being struck by a westbound truck about 2:30 a.m. near Frosty’s Truck Stop east of Lordsburg. Margy Helen Bartle of San Francisco was identified as the deceased after initial records listed Marie Fernandez. The driver, Donald A. Summers of Clarkesville Tennessee, could not avoid the collision. officer Mike Carrillo found the woman walking east with a bus ticket and speculated she may have been diabetic. The victim died minutes after arrival at Hillcrest General Hospital in Silver City.

Lordsburg Nursing Home Opens in Lordsburg

The Retirement Ranch of Lordsburg opened to receive residents with dedication ceremonies led by Mayor Pro Tem Richard Allen who represented Governor Bruce King. A Saturday banquet drew local leaders from Hidalgo Area Development Corporation Chamber of Commerce Hidalgo General Hospital and Lordsburg City Council.

Local Guard Unit Returns From Camp

Local Guard unit 2nd AW Bn 200th Army returned from 15 days at Dona Ana Range after evaluating training by the 4th US Army Reserve Components Team. Major Jesus Estrada and Capt. Frank Estrada served on the Evaluation Team. The unit, from Las Cruces and surrounding towns, earned several plaques for best firing battery and softball champions amid a retirement ceremony for two members.

City to Enforce Trailer Home Ordinance and Sewage Rules

City officials discussed environmental aspects of a proposed new sewage plant and planned strict enforcement of trailer ordinance due to improper connections and permits. Transfer Students To Report Next Week

All transfer students who plan to enroll in the Lordsburg Municipal School system for the coming school year 1972 1973 should report to the High School Dugan Tarango Middle School or the Central Elementary School during the week of August 14th through the 18th. Vaccination certificates should be presented and Elementary School children should bring their birth certificates.

Holy Day of Obligation August 15 Celebrated in Lordsburg

Rev. Pedro Diaz of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lordsburg announced a Holy Day of obligation for Tuesday August 15 the Feast of the Assumption. Two masses are scheduled at 8:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m inviting all Catholics to attend.
