Hidalgo Welfare fire Staff To Be Sa

Appointment of Thomas C as director of Hidalgo County Welfare and Social Service is announced. The Lordsburg office will operate full time from Aug 15, adding two caseworkers two aides and two clerks. Catherine Sharp and William Herlihy named as caseworkers.

Registration Schedule For LHS Set

New teachers have been employed and class schedules adjusted since spring. Social registration days are planned for all high school students. Freshmen and juniors will have health checks and attend on specific days with a staggered schedule: Freshmen 9:30 am August 4, Seniors 1:00 pm August 13, Juniors 8:30 am August 14, Sophomores 1:00 pm August 14.

C&E Softball League: Fed Resources Rally Tops Southwest Supply

Rain postponed games from Monday were made up tonight as C&E beat Shell Oilers 10-5 and Federal Resources overcame Southwest Supply 8-7. Shell accrued seven hits with Armando Camacho doubling and Rendon homering then doubling. Fed Resources built a late surge for the comeback win with hits by Gumbi Alvarez Morelos Contreras and the game winning homer by Chevy Rodriguez.

Virden-Duncan Gila Watershed Project Wins Initial OK

State Engineer Steve Reynolds announced approval of the Virden-Duncan watershed project on the Gila River. Adnan Richins, project committee chair, said a feasibility study will be prepared by Soil Conservation Service staff and watershed committee, with cross state action needed. Secretary Orville Freeman cited new federal authority to speed small watershed construction and funding across 1400 communities nationwide.

Tax Reporting Forms Delayed By Change In State Forms

State to Take Bids On Hidalgo Oil and Gas Leases

The State Land Office will bid on 250 Hidalgo County tract leases for oil and gas on August 20 amid a confidential request from a large oil firm. Tracts range 640 acres with some over 1200, plus additional parcels in Luna Grant Lincoln Quay DeBaca Curry Dona Ana Mora and Otero Counties and in Chavez Eddy Lea Roosevelt. Bids may be opened over several days with some oral bids, to let firms compete for acreage before exploration begins.

Candidates for Congress and Governor Visit in Lordsburg

State Senator Mack Easely, former lieutenant governor under Governor Jack Campbell, campaigned in Lordsburg on Tuesday. Senator Harold L. Runnells of Lovington, vying for the Democratic nomination for Congress, also campaigned and visited in Lordsburg on Saturday.

Local Attorney Dies In Fire On West Fourth Street

Local attorney C Nunn Jr was found dead in his home after a fire broke out about 145 am neighbors awoke to a shattered window. Fire officials said the blaze started in a living room chair or sofa and the room was not burned though smoke and soot covered the house. A coroner's inquest was held with funeral arrangements pending.

Hope Raised For Nursing Home Location Here

Representatives of a non-profit group visited Lordsburg to study locating a facility combining nursing home sheltered care and retirement housing. Mayor Koff and HADECO pledged support while State officials and local leaders reviewed needs rules and potential sites. The project would create 35 to 40 jobs and serve seniors, with a decision expected soon.

Ceiling Collapse Injures Two in Hidalgo Hotel Cafe

Two Southern Pacific trainmen, George Emmerick and J. J. Kirsch, were minorly injured when the south west corner ceiling of the Hidalgo Hotel Coffee Shop collapsed last Friday at noon. The cafe closed as plaster dust showered patrons and removal work began for a new ceiling.
