W. E. Oxsheer Honored at Retirement Party in Lordsburg

A July 31 party at the F. H. Daniels home marked W. E. Oxsheer’s retirement after 50 years with the railroad. Over 250 friends attended as Oxsheer received gifts including a recliner chair and a vase. Festivities featured food, songs, and multiple local officials and dignitaries, with Oxsheer’s career spanning Houston East & West Texas, Southern Pacific, and years in Bisbee and Lordsburg.

Lordsburg Shows Off Two Fine Airports

Lordsburg, the hub of aviation, touts two well kept airports in daily use. The Municipal Airport south of town has 834 acres with 384 in use and a $750,000 Congress appropriation for paving. The newer north of town, run by M N Kuykendall, spans 137 acres with all weather runways and night landing lights, hosting over 42 flight students.

James Sumner musician and writer dies in Lordsburg

James Stafford Sumner, born January 9 1881 in Canada, died August 4 at the Hidalgo hotel after a months long illness. A 1937 arrival in Lordsburg, he worked as pianist and later clerk at Hotel Hidalgo and published songs including Moon Over the Mongolians and the 12th Street Rag lyrics. Funeral August 6 at Heather Mortuary with a male quartet.

Government to Get More Grazing Fees

The Federal Government will take a larger share of Taylor Grazing Act fees after a bill signed by President Truman. States will receive 12 percent, down from 50, with the rest to the Federal Treasury. A new separate range improvement fee will be added, both fees deemed reasonable.
