St Josephs Church hosts its annual bazaar at Short Park this Saturday and Sunday with community vendors, games, and refreshments. Proceeds support church programs and local outreach efforts.
Superintendent Phil DeFoor told the Lordsburg School Board that the high school construction is on schedule and the district will not postpone starting time. Registration is set for Wednesday with classes to begin afterward. Ovens, steamer, and lockers in the Cafetorium are ready. DeFoor noted his conference remarks on unified guidance and his new appointment to a state corporal punishment committee. Milk contract awarded to Price's Creameries over Borden's bid of 15.7 cents.
New Mexico State University researchers James Peach and James Williams project state population rising from 1.3 million in 1980 to about 2.5 million by 2020. Hidalgo County is expected to grow from 6,049 in 1980 to 11,651 by 2020, with data drawn from Census figures and births deaths and migration trends.
First Sergeant Clemente Baisa received a Certificate of Retirement from Major General Edward D. Baca in Lordsburg. Baisa, who retired August 3 1987 after 36 years with the New Mexico Army National Guard and U S Army, began in the U S Navy in July 1945 and served with the occupation forces in Asia Pacific after World War II.
Beatrice Lewis 66 passed away August 1 in Eugene Oregon. Born April 21 1921 she lived in Lordsburg since 1978 and worked many years at Circle H Convenience Store. Preceded by husband Clyde Lewis and son Billy Wayne Lewis she is survived by sons Perry Lewis and Clyde Albert Lewis four daughters twenty nine grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren A memorial service will be held at Lordsburg Church of Latter Day Saints Thursday August 6 at 7 PM.
Kentucky Fried Chicken files a complaint naming the City of Lordsburg and alleges gas line leaks since 1976 forced relocation, odor complaints, two floor fires, and required safety upgrades. KFC seeks damages, costs, and attorney fees while city counsel seeks dismissal claiming tort immunity and no insurance.
The city outlines a future paving project to install drains under the Main Street Animas Street underpass and add curb at Pyramid Street end to divert floodwater into the drainage system. Completion hoped by end of summer. The St. Joseph Catholic Church bazaar moves to Short Park this weekend for better facilities with food booths and activities.
