School Board Hires Four New Teachers

Lordsburg School Board approves four new teachers Marilyn Felts from El Paso business college specializes in business education. Rosales Bernal from Ft Sumner will teach special education at junior and senior schools. Martha Ortiz from Hurley will teach special education at junior and senior schools. Connie Holmes from Silver City will teach kindergarten. Also discussed urethane roof work and bids for Central School evaporative coolers. wind delayed start. Immunization and bus trial dominate Hidalgo board agenda

The board cancelled the August 10 immunization clinic and set a new date for August 24. A cancer clinic is offered at no charge. A one month trial bus program for students received a daily usage criterion of ten riders. Opening for teachers is August 17 with August 22 as school start and August 19 registration. The Student Athletic Code aims to include drug and alcohol clauses and eligibility rules, with a senior trip to Disneyland proposed for phase-out and a final trip in Spring 1986.

Suit Filed In District Court By Bob Green

Local businessman Robert E. Green sues Hidalgo County Magistrate Rosa Lina Salinas State Patrolwoman Roxanne Lea McGahey Assistant District Attorney Mary Ann Newell and District Attorney Ralph Ellingwood in federal court alleging Fourth Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment violations seeking 300000 plus costs. He claims McGahey filed a false complaint about stolen vehicles and Salinas issued a warrant, leading to his arrest and two and a half hours detention. He also accuses Newell Ellingwood of continuing felonious proceedings and seeks damages. He notes a stolen car found on his property May 20 and a later illegal John Doe warrant leading to seizure and arrest July 1.

Senator Domenici Announces HUD Grant for Shady Grove Motel

Senator Pete Domenici’s Washington office confirmed a $286,000 HUD Urban Development Assistance grant to Shady Grove for a 50 room motel. The project is expected to create 33 jobs and generate about $6,000 in annual taxes in the Lordsburg area.

Classmates Of The 60s Visit In Lordsburg

A Lordsburg reunion of the classes of the 60s brought old friends together with memories of carefree days. The organizing committee coordinated events, contacted alumni, and arranged meals with help from the FHA Club and supporters. A full attendee list by class appears on Page 2.

Ali Salinas Named Outstanding Supervisor in District Five

Ali Salinas was chosen by a review committee as the Outstanding Supervisor of District Five for the Summer Youth Employment program. The award, presented in Las Cruces at the Howard Johnson Motel, honors his cooperation with the community and youth outreach, selected over nominees from Grant, Dona Ana, Otero, Catron, Lincoln, Socorro, and Sierra Counties.

City Clean Up Day turnout and future funds report

The City expresses gratitude for over 200 participants at Clean-Up Day and a large barbecue, apologizing for meat shortages. Thanks are given to Kipp Ranch for meat and Angel Talavera for barbecue prep. The Community Assistance Council will decide this week on Lordsburg’s energy and mining related funding eligibility, with a report to Liberal next week.

First Annual Chile Cook-Off at Hidalgo County Fair

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce hosts the first Chile Cook-Off during the Hidalgo County Fair with three categories Red Chile Green Chile and Chile Salsa. Entries due August 26 serving at least 20 people. First place advances to the World’s Chile Fare September 17 at Mesilla Valley Mall Las Cruces. Call 9864 for details.

Animas Schools Open August 18

The Animas Public Schools begin Thursday August 18 with a 9 a.m. teachers orientation in the Cultural Building. Students start Friday August 19. Buses arrive 8:15 to 8:30 a.m. School dismisses at 1 p.m.
