County Agent Applicants for Hidalgo County Heated Debate

Virginia Jones of the County Extension Service told Hidalgo County Commissioners 19 applicants applied for the county extension agent position. The post was left vacant when former agent Roy Vaughn moved to Catron County. All applicants have been screened and 6 remain.

Registration Dates Set For School District News

The Lordsburg Municipal School District schedules 1983 registration across campuses. Elementary registrations run 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on August 19 for pre registered kindergartners and returning students. New district students must bring proof of age and immunizations. Middle and high school registrations follow with assigned homerooms and class schedules after assemblies. Bus transport schedules and return trips start on August 22.

County Fair Parade Guides Hidalgo Event Schedule

The Hidalgo County Fair opens with a themed parade Out of the Windy West on September 9 and 10. Chamber manager Frances Calderon says the Friday parade begins at 2 00 PM with local and visiting groups including Ft Bliss army band Smokey the Bear and the Bayard Shriners.

Local Zoning Committee Probes Inspector Need and Car Lot Fence

At the zoning meeting Chairman Harold Bishop pressed for a building inspector to strengthen enforcement of ordinances. The panel condemned a chain link fence housing a used car lot in Residential A, despite prior requests for removal. A sign for Shady Grove on private land drew questions about authorization and placement. A variance for a building extension was tabled to October 10 for resubmission.

Lordsburg Council Sees Soap Box Derby Ad Vote

Lordsburg city fathers met for a routine session approving $625.60 for Soap Box Derby advertising after Heidi Anderson urged funds. Major topics included a questionable residential fence, zoning board needs, a cancer insurance pitch by Dave Stacy, a September 26 beer and wine referendum, and a water pump request at Dunagan property. Computer bids for finance and inventory systems were opened and tabled, with three bids: Southwest Information Systems 41704.00, Wang Laboratories 36718.60, Benchmark Data System 39405.00.

Eleven Warrants Issued In Drug Raid

Early Thursday morning 33 officers armed with 11 warrants arrested 10 local Lordsburg residents including one juvenile. The raid based on conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance was organized by Hidalgo Sheriff’s Department and led by Narcotics Officer Phil Rodriguez. Participating agencies included Grant County, New Mexico State Police, Roswell, Silver City, U.S. Border Patrol, Grants Police and Hidalgo Sheriff’s Department.
