1960s Class Reunion A Real Blast In Lordsburg

The Lordsburg 1960s alumni weekend featured Friday to Sunday reunions with private gatherings, a July 23 banquet at the Civic Center, a banquet by the FHA Club menu of BBQ chicken and ham, a dance by Latin Image, and a Sunday KP Grounds picnic. Teachers and former principals attended, with Miss Rankin winning Most Eligible Bachelorette. Names and addresses of attendees will be published August 5 in the Lordsburg Liberal.

City to Weatherize Homes Under Block Grant Program

June article notes kickoff of the Community Development Block Grant Program after Mayor Hill won the U S Housing and Urban Development backing to weatherize homes of low and moderate income owners on Lordsburg north side. City will accept applications August 1 1983 from residents with construction experience. preference to city residents. Contractors will be urged to use local labor and vendors. The city will maintain a two year ready list of qualified applicants and will provide a reference but not hire. Tenants-to-be and numbers: 40 applications received to date, five to bid soon.

Lordsburg Cleanup Day Saturday City announces event details

Lordsburg will host a cleanup day Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Volunteers should report to the city shop or join a crew. Free swimming from 3 to 7 p.m. Barbecue begins at 5 p.m. at Short Park field house. Barbecue tickets cost 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children, free to cleanup participants. In bad weather, barbecue moves indoors.

Department Plans Seminars on Drug Education Programs

Hidalgo County Sheriff Darnell announces public information programs to combat drug and alcohol abuse. The aim is to educate parents and concerned citizens so youth recognize symptoms and victims of substance abuse. He stresses alcohol and drugs affect all social groups and thanks supporters of the program.

City Raises Water Rates By John Schimmel

City council in special session approved an immediate water rate increase. Mayor Steven Hill cited higher energy costs and proposed a $1 service charge rise and 20 cents more per 1000 gallons. Residential rates would move from $5 to $6, and consumption charges from 60 to 80 cents per 1000 gallons. commercial minimum up to $7 with gallonage rising to $1.10 per 1000 gallons. He noted past six months of costs exceeding revenues and only seven black months in two years. The last increase was January 1982 under PSC control. a 26 percent rise was then needed. He warned another hike could come if trends persist, and aimed to reduce department expenses to keep operations in the black. The council approved by voice vote with no ordinance text provided.

Phelps Dodge Corporation announced an immediate base price rise for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes to 81 cents per pound, up from 79 cents. The change tightens metal costs for buyers and signals stronger market momentum for refined copper.

New Medical Clinic Opens in Animas Under Hidalgo Medical Services

Hidalgo Medical Services opens a non profit clinic in Animas on July 27 offering Monday Wednesday Friday 9 am to 3 pm staffed by Dr. Wallin Bill Taylor P A and Jan Hopkins R N. Taylor a National Health Service Corps member, comes from Mora New Mexico with 20 years service. Billing uses sliding scale based on income and family size with emergency contact via 548 2403. Businessmen Set Second Get-To-Gether

Local businessmen and the Chamber of Commerce will hold a no host luncheon meeting on August 4 at the China Doll Restaurant to address Lordsburg Hidalgo County economic issues. Prior topics include ramp lighting and city trash clean up with planned July 30 volunteer efforts and donations to relight ramp lights. Attendance urged by a spokesman for the group.
