Heidi James of Rodeo placed second, and zone competition will be held in Las Cruces April 30 with entrants from Alamogordo Las Cruces Silver City and Deming en route to a District contest in Pecos Texas for scholarships.
Mountain Bell shifts local telecom functions to Albuquerque centralizing work and eliminating Las Cruces record keeping. About 60 jobs affected while 100 remain, with specialized roles for service reps and dispatch in a move to advanced long distance numbering and centralized repair reporting. Continued on page two.
Hester Smith aged 68 of 2400 South Eighth Street died at home on Monday April 19. Born February 18, 1914 in Dodge City Kansas she lived in Deming most of her life and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Association of Retired Persons. Funeral services were conducted at 10 AM Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. W L Sanders of Lordsburg officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Survived by three sons Richard McNutt Deming Gerald and Don McNutt Lordsburg a daughter Joni Dodson Deming a brother Al Hughes Deming a sister Nathalie Gage Casa Grande Arizona eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A son Wally Hart and a sister Dorothy Balenti preceded her in death. Pallbearers were Clifford Gray Manuel Chavez Tim ONeill Darrell Hawkins Robert Rhaton and Ted Pienzac. Wheeler Mortuary handled arrangements.
Crime Stoppers seeks tips to solve a Hidalgo County burglary at 992 East Railroad Avenue. Between April 17 evening and April 18 morning suspects stole 14 tires valued at $1105.61. A reward up to $500 is offered for information leading to arrest and indictment. The commission also pays rewards for other major felonies in Hidalgo County.
The Governors Office of Community Assistance ended the energy bill aid program on March 24, leaving Texas New Mexico Power Company customers delayed 60 to 90 days. TNP plans to arrange payment schedules for consistently prompt payers. District Manager A C Rodriguez of TNP in Lorsburg said the firm does not want to terminate service.
The county wide Jazz-er-thon at the high school gym on Saturday April 24 supports the New Mexico chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Pre-registration starts at 12 30 p m with the event at 1 p m. eight half hour sessions follow. Participants raise pledges based on sessions. prizes include T shirts radios and cassette recorders.
Ralph Ellinwood announces Philip W. Steere as the new Assistant District Attorney for the Sixth District. Steere will reside in Silver City and work from the Grant County office, with a law degree from UNM in 1967 and bar admission in 1968, having practiced civil and criminal defense as a contract public defender. He is 40 with one son. former candidate John Eaton withdrew. Steere began work in the Sixth District on April 19.
Lordsburg Schools announce kindergarten pre-registration on Wednesday May 5 from 5 30 to 7 30 PM in the Kindergar ten Rooms at R V Traylor Elementary School Birth certificates and immunization records must be presented for enrollment Eligible children must be five years old before September 1 1982
