Lawmakers push to fix broken education funding and 89 district divide

House jority leader Salman chairs the Legislative School Committee and urges the legislature to critique education policy. He criticizes the 89 district system and multiple salary schedules, warning funding will worsen and that a single unified approach is needed. committee projects are planned before May 15.

Thompson Named Lordsburg High School Principal

Samuel M. Thompson appointed by Lordsburg Municipal School District board as high school principal to replace David Gobble who resigned to become superintendent at San Simon Arizona. Thompson has taught at junior high and high school in Lordsburg and previously at Cobre elementary. He leads the Lordsburg Education Association and holds a BA from Trinity University a BD from McCormick Seminary with graduate work at Western New Mexico University and near completion of a master's degree at UNM.

VFW Post Installs Officers For 1971 72

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2099 installed officers for 1971 72 at the La Fiesta on Thursday April 22. Newly named officers include Commander Joe Orona Sr vice commander Felipe Alvarez jr vice commander Lawrence Flores chaplin George Bridgeford service officer Alfredo Morelos adjutant Al Word trustee Manuel Renteria and quartermaster James Kinkema. Orona urged help for planned projects and set Buddy Poppy Day for May 1 to aid disabled soldiers and Eaton Rapids Michigan Children’s Home. May activity includes cleaning VFW monuments at Shakespeare and Mountain View Cemeteries the Sunday before Memorial Day May 23.

Poster Contest Winners Named at Knight of Pythias Event

First place in the local Knights of Pythias safety poster contest went to Corrine Martinez with George Diaz finishing second and Hilda Parra third. Prizes were presented Tuesday night as organizers thanked the school and all participants.

RC&D Committee Meets In Lordsburg

The Southwest New Mexico Resource Conservation and Development Project Steering Committee met April 29 at Lordsburg City Hall. New members were appointed, agendas discussed, and 1972 priorities set. committees worked on Trout Creek Dam and future projects including 180 Scenic Area Computer Industries and a Native Shrub Nursery.

Roy Gandara Wins KofP Speaking Contest

Roy Gandara earned first place in the Knights of Pythias local speaking contest at Pythian Hall on April 27. Four L H S seniors competed with Christine Johnson taking second and Freddy Laguna third. Lawrence Fiores was fourth. Judges praised all speeches on youth and fraternal orders. Gandara receives a $25 bond and will represent Lordsburg lodge at the May 4 district event in Belen. Plaques were given to runners up. sponsor Mrs Emmie Rose Hill lauded.

Koff Sues Mayor and City Treasurer Over Farm Purchase

Alan A. Koff former mayor filed suit against Edward M Fisher treasurer and Betty H lawar mayor to stop a 75000 purchase of the R. W. Cureton farm and five wells. alleges unlawful use of municipal funds under New Mexico statutes. The farm covers 985 acres with a large concrete tank and water storage sought for city supply. The action follows a special council meeting April 23 as Ameon International discussed a low rent housing project and potential FHA approval.

Renteria Named District LULAC Leader at Deming Convention

Manuel V. Renteria was chosen District LULAC Officer after a three way tie was resolved by District Director Edward Chaires. The honor enables him to represent the Yesta convoy flow at the upcoming state convention in Las Cruces May 26 40. Delegates from Silver City Hurley Deming and Lordsburg attended with several local members listed.

Miss Gladys Sapp to retire as First National Bank VP

Miss Gladys Sapp vice president of the First National Bank of Lordsburg retires June 6 after 35 years of service. She started June 6 1936 as one of four employees including manager E S Lewis and held roles in insurance teller and bookkeeper before becoming cashier and later VP. A serious illness last year prompted the decision. She thanks colleagues and friends and looks forward to future visits.
