Legislative committee aims for university stability in New Mexico

Senator J M Smalley chairs the University Study Committee urging stability at the University of the Southwest and oversight of regents. Other USC members include Richard Carbajal and Robert Moran. The panel seeks balanced funding, with talk of a $5.7 million equalization fund and pending Sunday liquor sales legislation. The Legislature also contemplates gambling and tax base expansion. Governors appointed Hollis Cummins and Kelly Mora to State Hospitals and Institutions boards amid ongoing fund and facility concerns.

Drouth Measures Tabled by Hidalgo County Disaster Committee

The Hidalgo County Disaster Committee met at the County ASCS Office in Lordsburg on April 15 to review emergency programs for farmers and ranchers amid an extremely critical drought. They urged including Hidalgo County in any disaster declarations and sought REAP or FHA funding for water development, with grazing set-aside allowed until relief from water shortages arrives. Attending were W. G. Richards chair, Ed Hitson, Louise Lytle, Steve Villareal, though Villareal could not attend.

Chino Mines Offers Ten Scholarships Across New Mexico

The Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp awards ten $500 scholarships for the fall term across five New Mexico universities Western New Mexico University University of New Mexico New Mexico State University Eastern New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University. Selection is by the division’s committee from nominees by college officials. Additional engineering scholarships of $2,000 total are provided by Kennecott and the New York office to NM schools and NM Tech.

Circus Day Arrives in Lordsburg With Carson & Barnes

Next Wednesday April 28 the Carson & Barnes Five Ring Circus appears at the Lordsburg Fair Grounds with 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. performances. The show features elephants, aerialists, clowns, trained horses, and a all girl aerial ballet. Tickets on sale at the grounds. visitors urged to arrive early for parking and midway exhibits.

National School Bus Safety Week Proclaimed in Lordsburg

Lordsburg Superintendent Carl McMillan announced April 19 to 24, 1971 as National School Bus Safety Week with a New Mexico proclamation by Governor Bruce King. Lordsburg bus operators travel 74,016 miles yearly transporting 348 students and urge motorists to stop for flashing red lights and limit speed near buses.

Local LULAC Council To Award Scholarships This Year

Lordsburg LULAC Council No. 358 will award three scholarships to Lordsburg High School seniors based on scholastic achievement leadership and need. Recipients will be selected to promote education as a foundation for cultural growth and American principles. Seniors should contact principal David Gobble to be considered.

Pre School Clinic Planned for Animas School

Animas Elementary School hosts its annual preschool clinic for children who will enter first grade next fall. The event is set for Wednesday April 28 at 12 30 pm in the first grade room. Parents should bring the child birth certificate or age proof. Eligible children must be six by January 1 1972. Former Mayor Sues To Halt Lordsburg Bond Issue

Alan A. Koff former Lordsburg mayor files district court suit to enjoin current Mayor Betty H. Lazar and the City from issuing revenue bonds under Ordinance No 244 for water sewer and gas system improvements arguing insufficient income for debt retirement lack of feasibility studies and potential misuse of funds. A prior council vote in 1976 authorized 700000 in bonds but was halted by earlier suits from Leo Harris Russell Smith and Victor Lazar.

Former LHS Teacher Richard Robertson Dies in California

Richard Robertson aged 56, a former Lordsburg High School teacher from 1953 to 1958, died in Watsonville California after a heart attack on August 24 1970 and a cerebrovascular accident on March 19 1971 that left him unconscious. He had been a Lordsburg visitor last summer.
