Car Conference Roudeo Winners Earn Scholarships

Entrants from across the region competed in the Car Conference Roudeo held in City last Friday. Lordsburg High School contestants Yacamo Henry Vasquez Rockwell and David Sch Mary Yacamo and Charles Bar of Espanola won top honors earning a 250 dollar scholarship from the Motor Carriers of New Mexico. Mary topped the girls with 606 points and placed first overall.

Speaking For Seniors contest to be held May 2 at the high school

Public invited to a high school speaking contest sponsored by Pyr Lodge No 23 Knights. Senior high speakers practice on safety highway topics. Contestants include Pe Parker Duane Kamstra Mary Yacamo and Frank Schmidt. First second and third prizes cover expenses for the state contest in Al May 7.

Former Lordsburg Resident Injured in Car Upset

Mrs Art Bolling, formerly of Lordsburg now living in Silver City, is hospitalized after a truck rollover caused by a dust storm last Friday afternoon April 22. She was thrown from the vehicle, lay on the road about thirty minutes, then was taken to the hospital with bruises and a badly wrenched back. She is recovering and expected to be released soon.

Legion Auxiliary Convention Very Successful

The Sev enthistrict American Legion Auxiliary spring meeting convened Sunday morning April 24 at the Lords burg Woman's Club. Local president Mrs Claude Full yer opened the session at 9 30 AM with flags carried by Mrs Robert Williams and Mrs Catherine Carruthers. Music by the Malott guitar ensemble accompanied by several members. The flag pledge led by Mrs Nan Genta and the constitution preamble by Mrs Elizabeth Sparks.

Old Timers Rodeo Days Set With Hidalgo County Fair

The Old Timer Association Hidalgo County Fair Board and Sheriff Posse plan a fall celebration. Dates chosen are September 15 16 and 17 with planners from the Chamber of Commerce and county officers. Dust Storm Triggers Plane Crash Near Lordsburg

A Beechcraft Bonanza crash landed on the Sherwood Culberson ranch three miles north of Lordsburg after visibility was lost in a Friday dust storm around 4:30 PM. Occupants included George Davidson his wife and a passenger from Loma Linda California with the craft badly damaged.

Pedestrian Struck and Killed Near Lordsburg

Authorities report a man identified as John Wass Cummings was fatally struck by a pickup driven by Edward Parna of Safford Arizona shortly after 4:00 AM Saturday about three tenths of a mile east of Lordsburg city limits. Cummings last resided at 1165 West 49th Street Los Angeles California. The coroner ruled death from a fractured skull with Parna saying he was blinded by another vehicle’s glare and could not avoid the collision.

Bobby Clark Soon Home From California Recovery Center

Mr and Mrs Robert Clark plan to bring Bobby home by plane around May 5 from the Rencho Los Amigos Respiratory Center in Hondo California where he has stayed four months. He has improved physically and still requires iron lung support every four hours for two to three hours. He enjoys chess checkers and stamp collecting and his sister Judith will stay with grandparents in Gila until school ends.

Lordsburg Mavericks Edge In At Hurley Meet

Lordsburg Mavericks placed fifth in field events at Hurley Invitational while winning the 600 yd relay and taking second in the mile medley. Raul Diaz added points with thirds in the 100 and 220 yd dashes as the team, 19 strong, travels to Las Cruces for the 4-B district meet with seven teams, including Animas making its debut and Hatch favored to win.

Car Thief Leads Deming Police on Wild Chase

At 12 25 am Saturday Deming police chased a stolen 1953 Pontiac owned by Tommy Broeco as the thief headed toward Lordsburg. Night patrolman Chavez spotted the car turning south on Animas Street then west on Railroad Avenue crashing through a fence. The driver escaped, then reportedly stole another Pontiac belonging to Bob Williams as officers searched the area.

Loyalty Day Parade Planned by VFW in Lordsburg

The VFW of Lordsburg schedules a Loyalty Day Parade and ceremony for Sunday at 2:00 PM starting from the vacant lot east of the Chevrolet garage. The event, observed since 1950, emphasizes loyalty to America under the theme Loyalty Means Liberty, with context about May Day history.

Legion District Convention Opens in New Mexico

The 1955 Spring Convention of District No. 7 of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary in New Mexico opened in a joint session at the Legion Hall. About one hundred people registered as Commander Cassie Martinez presided with the Chaplin Rev. Fulton Moore giving the invocation and singers performing. Distinguished guests included Department President Mrs. H. M. Davidson and Department officials W. Peter McAttee and H. Ray Sherritt.
