Navy 1 28 Plane Crashes Near Animas Sunday

A Navy plane crashed near Animas last Sunday afternoon as it burned on the ground. The two occupants J R Bdsen and Co fot J H Sandelar Pile Naval Canot tery were aboard. The craft descended after attempting a landing from 18 000 feet but flames reached the cockpit before touchdown.

Jose Perez Allegedly Repeats Car Theft Escapades

16 year old Jose Perez of Mexico is again in trouble with local officers after crossing the border illegally and stealing multiple cars. He was captured after a crash near Steins, jailed, deported, and later detained in Lordsburg and Hidalgo County on new theft charges with bail set at 1000 dollars and a pending trial before Judge A W.

Arthur Bolling of the Lordsburg VFW posts a $15 donation to Paul Malott of the Lordsburg Civil Air Patrol as six local organizations sponsor cadets for the summer encampment at Williams Air Force Base Arizona. Each sponsor contributes fifteen dollars to cover a cadet’s expenses for the U S Air Force program.

Lordsburg Basemen Defeat Duncan 17 to 9 in Sunny Win

Lordsburg baseballers finally broke into the win column last Sunday afternoon beating Duncan 17 to 9. After an opening frame where Duncan scored 3 runs to Lordsburg's 2 the game was never in doubt. The result may end the jinx that has plagued the locals since early last season.

Lions Club Hosts Senior Boys Dinner 100 Scholarship Planned

The Lions Club held a April 27 dinner for senior boys at Elsie Lee with about thirty Lions guests including two sponsors and the principal. Dr J H Baxter spoke on post graduation plans and the club announced a $100 annual scholarship with selection by club officials and a committee. Each attendee received Lions key chains and certificates.

Farrell Lines Wins District 4B Tennis Championship

Farrell Lines of Virden captured his second consecutive District 4B Tennis Championship earning a spot at the State Tournament in Albuquerque on May 6 and 7. He opened with a 6 3 6 3 victory over Parker of Hachita, then defeated Trujillo of Hot Springs 6 1 6 1 before facing second seed Bobby Aragon from Hot Springs in the final.

Bryant to Lead Tucumcari Branch of Mountain States

H H Bryant longtime manager at Lordsburg moves to Tucumcari to assume duties as branch manager on May 9. He has served as Chamber of Commerce president, Lion's Club past president, fire department and K P Lodge member. His wife and daughters will join later after school ends. An informal farewell party honored him with gifts and refreshments for attendees including Orpha Nally and others.

Loyalty Day Parade and Ceremony Highlights

Last Sunday May loyalty observances drew strong crowds. The 2:00 P M parade began at Hidalgo Garage and moved to the high school football field led by VEW Commander Art Bolling. Participation included American Legion and VFW color guards, the high school band under Drum Majorette Karen Steele, the National Guard Unit led by Bennie Everett, and the Girl Scout Troop.

Lordsburg High School ensembles earn top ratings at regional

The Horn Quartette Brass Sextette and Clarinet Quintette from Lordsburg High School received Superior and Excellent ratings at the Regional Music Competition at the University of Athens. Fifty seven Arizona entries competed. Lordsburg earned two of the six Superior ratings for the Horn Quartette and Brass Sextette while the Clarinet Quintette earned Excellent. Gold medals were awarded for Superior or Excellent ratings.

Patrolmen Capture Mexican Sneak Thief In Animal

Gene Pyeatt and Tom Hull of the Lordsburg Border Patrol seized a Mexican intruder named Reuben Padilla age 40 after he broke into the Eichs' home near Cloverdale. Padilla allegedly took a high powered rifle, cartridges, sheets and a knife before police recovered the items and handed him to Sheriff Ed Jackson. He faced breaking and entering and grand larceny charges and was jailed in lieu of bail pending trial before District Judge A W Marshall.
