The Maverick reports four students earned honor status for the period. Edward Altuna Stephen Birchfield Sara Gass and Marquis Smith achieved straight A grades to qualify. Honor students gain library access and building entry at any hour for study.
Severina Franco daughter of Mr and Mrs Heliodoro Franco died at home on Sunday April 23 1933 aged 14 years 3 months She was in the fifth grade and had attended school regularly though for two months she suffered severe headaches Funeral services were held Monday and Wilson school members were dismissed to attend The besides her parents siblings Hathodory Franco two younger brothers survive
The 4 H club met Saturday morning April 22 1933 at 10 00 in the Domestic Science Room. Mrs Cruse gave a bleaching demonstration that was very interesting and successful.
The Girl Scouts held a Court of Honor Thursday night at 7 00. Badge recipients include Hannah Mae Ewan Mildred Howe Lola Jane Graham and Juella Birehfield.
Sixth seventh and eighth graders went to Red Rock for a picnic last Friday. They left school around 8 p.m. and returned near 5 a.m. The group watched Boy Scouts set up camp, played baseball climbed trees and waded in the creek. Everyone enjoyed the outing.
Mary Morelos visited the Wilson School first grade room and entertained the children for thirty minutes with songs learned in Albuquerque schools. The fourth grade won the checker board chart this week with a score of 8889, ending the checkerboard contest at Wilson School.
The Thursday afternoon bridge group met at the home of Mrs. Roy Evans with members Eddie Allen Jean Luckie Ernest Short Claude Olney Oscar Allen Walter Boswell Richard Tastch Rufus Palm Frank Winters and Ed Malone. Guests included Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Graham. Mrs. Eddie Allen won high honors as ice cream and cookies were served.
Anthony B. Conner 70, longtime Red Rock resident and early U S mail carrier between Shakespeare and Silver City, died after a brief illness. Funeral at Cox funeral home Silver City with Pastor T A Phillips officiating. burial beside family. He is survived by widow, two daughters Mildred Prevost and Lewis, a sister Mrs Swan, brother J E Conner, and two grandchildren. Mr and Mrs J D Jones of El Paso visited the Wogstad family.
The Citizenship Class visited Dr. Buvens' dentist office on Monday afternoon. Dr. Buvens gave a short talk on dental care and diet. Each girl had her teeth examined and received individual guidance on needs.
On Saturday night April 22 Troop 121 and 123 hosted a Court of Honor at their Gila River camp. County Agent Brown presented badges. A brief program preceded a supper and short talks by committee members and Mr. Tolle.
Harvey Stengele collected a dollar from ticket sales as the annual Senior Class play Bashful Mr Bobbs entertained a large audience last Tuesday. Vernon Tolle, former Lordsburg superintendent, spoke. proceeds support graduation expenses.
The Liberal retracts its earlier marriage announcement for Miss Alta Cook and Herman McCullough of Duncan. The paper states the information was unreliable and apologizes for the inadvertent error.
The Lordsburg Golf Club formed after a Monday night meeting at the Hidalgo hotel lounge. Glen Ross Dr. R. E. Buvens and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lister elected to the executive committee with Pete Chase as secretary-treasurer. Membership set at $2 and 30 cents monthly dues. A vote of thanks was given to the property owners. Class A and Class B caddies will be paid 20 and 10 cents for nine holes.
The Chamber of Commerce was advised by wire of a bank robbery in Globe Tuesday morning. Officers were alerted, but the bandits remained at large after locking bank employees in the vault and stealing $34,800.
The Senior class play Tuesday evening proved a credit to the class its sponsor and the high school with notice of praise for its effort and presentation.
The 1933 May festival will be presented Monday at eight p m in the Central school gymnasium under teachers supervision. About 300 pupils will participate in a program including processional flower girls crown presentation queen Elaine Burross and many group acts. Tickets are not charged and seats available to the public.
The Lordsburg Lions welcomed six speakers at the school budget session in the county courthouse. Vernon O. Tolle led the list with lively remarks, followed by F. Owens a Santa Fe railroad tax representative, Superintendent Fuller of Virden schools, Hugh Sawyers of the State Taxpayer's Association, and Magruder of Southern Pacific who drew strong applause. Officers will be elected in two weeks and members were urged to attend the district convention in Silver City next month.
Lordsburg welcomed National Auxiliary American Legion president Mrs. S A Blackburn and state president Mrs. Warner Blair on Sunday. Local directors Mrs. J E Allen Mrs. Eddie Allen and Mrs. R A Egan hosted the event.
The P. T. A. Play Square Crooks will be staged by the Little Theatre on Thursday evening May 4 at the Lordsburg High School Auditorium. Indications say it will be one of the year’s best shows in Lordsburg. Don’t miss it.
Vernon O. Tolle former Hidalgo County education official and New Mexico Educational Association secretary visited Lordsburg. He spoke at the Methodist church on education budget matters, attended a Lions luncheon, and dined with Supt Palm and the faculty at the Up-to-Date cafe.
Budget auditors and state representatives along with county and township boards met at the courthouse Tuesday to prepare the present biennial school budget. Estimates show about a four percent reduction with potential small further cuts based on credit and valuation. With proper management the wage reduction for teachers should be negligible.
Lordsburg City Council asks residents to keep all dogs off public streets amid nationwide rabies scare. The notice urges owners to inform others and mentions Colson and O Neal with longtime locals at Palomas.
About fifty students with parents and others will attend an invitational Music Meet in Silver City on Saturday April 29. The schedule lists brass horn solos woodwind solos boys quartet girls trio piano solos string solos band girls solo mixed chorus boys solo violin solo boys chorus girls chorus and orchestra with a special concert of winners that evening. The Mavericks Woodwind Ensemble and Brass Sextette are invited to perform.
A group of Boy Scouts spent a weekend at Red Rock joining in Court of Honor exercises. Scout officials and guests awarded ranks to many scouts including life star first class and second class awards amid speeches by Palm Tolle Holt and others.
Annie Evans 39 wife of M C Evans who runs the Shell station with his son died Monday and was buried at her childhood home in Hachita on Wednesday. Rev M C Moore led funeral rites with Jack Heatherway as director. Mrs Nora Ownby accompanied to Douglas for her son R B Own at a hospital with pneumonia.
The Las Cruces Lions burro polo team traveled with district officials to Lordsburg. The final score was 6 to 5 with Lion Bill Turner and Lion Albert Miller key on defense and offense. After the game a Lions banquet, hosted by Methodist ladies, featured speeches from Governor Phillips and other leaders.
The Fourth District meeting of the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs in Lordsburg drew seventeen clubs from Alamagordo Ancho Anthony Canutillo Carrizozo Dona Ana Glencoe Las Cruces Lordsburg Mescalero Ruidoso State College and Tularosa. President Mrs. J F Bennett presided with speakers including State President Mrs. Jefferson D Atwood and Senator Lee Brown Atwood praising unity. A banquet at Hidalgo and resolutions on district officers and education were adopted.
Harold Scofield returns home from Bradley Tech Peoria with high honors. Lordsburg residents M J Wright Sam Richardson Deputy Ben Robertson and family Jr. of Red Rock were business visitors from Cloverdale Wednesday. Travelers in Lordsburg Monday report frequent activity.
