Elections Cancelled Until Further Notice in New Mexico

A three judge federal panel in Albuquerque ruled that New Mexico can postpone all June primary elections until the legislative reapportionment issue is settled. Hidalgo County Clerk Becky Diaz said ballots have not been printed and no future date was given. She noted costs could rise to about $12,000 for two primaries versus $6,000 normally, calling the situation expensive for a small county.

Lordsburg Council Hears Cable Rate Increase Request

The Lordsburg City Council heard a request from Harley Hill manager of Lordsburg Cable Television for a roughly ten percent rate rise. He sought one dollar more monthly for regular service and HBO, raising rates from 9.50 to 10.50 and 10.00 to 11.00 respectively. The council tabled the proposal.

New Mexico bids seek $350000 road and fencing jobs

Bids will be opened April 30 at the state highway department main office in Santa Fe for seven highway projects with an estimated total cost of $5.75 million. A 9.074 mile fencing project east of Animas on NM 9 in Hidalgo and Grant counties is valued around $260,000 and includes barbed wire fencing and gates. In Hidalgo County a school bus route project on County Road C-038 from NM 338 to Lemons Ranch, estimated at about $90,000 and managed by Placido Salas, covers 2 lane grading drain and gravel work with an expected 50 working days.

Property Taxes Due in Hidalgo County Despite Delinquency Warning

Hidalgo County Treasurer June Moore announced that the second half of 1981 state property taxes is due by April 5. Unpaid taxes will become delinquent if not paid by May 5, 1982.

Five Juveniles In Custody After Burglary Incidents

Hidalgo County Sheriff reports five juveniles taken into custody Tuesday after two burglary and criminal damage incidents. Arrests stem from a burglary at Mica's Buena Vista Liquors and thefts from Oscar Gutierrez delivery trucks. Incidents occurred in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Bob McAfee, linked with Don's Garage, soars over Lordsburg in a powered hang glider taking aerial photos at dawn and dusk. He cruises at about 35 mph, burns roughly a gallon per hour, and notes that licensing is not required though training is advised.

Senior Citizens and Summer Recreation Discussed by Hidalgo County Commission

The Hidalgo County Commission heard a senior citizens representative report funding strain from federal cutbacks affecting Title 20 programs. Ida Barker urged moral support for talks with federal officials on elder services. The panel also eyed a nonbinding co op with the state on road improvements and noted local groups seek funding for summer recreation, with bids approved for library HVAC and courthouse vault remodeling bids to be advertised.

Swiss Couple Caravan Through County on Long Voyage

Swiss couple Rosemarie Berthoud and husband Rene Berthoud with a horse and pack horse stayed at Reynold's Ranch north of Lordsburg during their third leg of a Quebec to Vancouver horseback journey. They began July 14, 1980 in Quebec and traveled through several states before wintering in Switzerland and resuming in 1981 to Silver City. They expect to reach Vancouver, enjoying travel, horses, and friendly locals, with their dog Bella joining in when tired.

White Collar Salaries Cut At Phelps Dodge

Phelps Dodge Corp announced salary reductions for white collar staff at Playas and Tyrone effective May 1. Cuts range up to eight percent for salaries above 40,000, with four percent for those under 40,000. About 600 Tyrone workers are to be laid off starting April 17. Playas Smelter remains unaffected.

Alma Yacomo Dies at 73 in California

Alma Yacomo formerly of Lordsburg died March 28 1982 in Glendale California aged 73 born September 30 1908 in Chula Missouri. She married Lawrence Yacomo September 3 1932 and lived in Lordsburg 1950 to 1963 then Silver City 1937 to 1950 and Glendale since 1964. She is survived by daughters Laura Hargett and Mary LeBlac three grandsons two sisters and a brother. Cremation and ashes scattered at sea March 30 1982.
