Governor Bruce King Signs Controversial Bills in 1970 Session

Governor King signed a batch of bills including an emergency clause on the University Study Committee funding and extending retirement plan credits for lawmakers. He also approved measures expanding the Legislative School Study Committee and appointing district judges and prosecutors for new judicial districts in Valencia Sandoval Lincoln Otero and other areas.

Leandro Castillo Dies in Bedrock Road Crash North of Lordsburg

Leandro Vera Castillo died when his car overturned after failing to negotiate a curve on Bedrock Road about eight miles north of Lordsburg. A passenger, Delfina Pena, had minor injuries. Funeral services were held April 13 at Heather Chapel. Castillo, born August 29, 1948, was a 1967 Lordsburg High School graduate and Vietnam veteran. Survivors include his parents, a sister, two brothers, a grandmother, and other relatives. Burial followed at Shakespeare Cemetery.

Circus Day Set in Lordsburg With Two Shows

The Carson and Barnes Five Ring Wild Animal Circus comes to Lordsburg on April 28 for two performances at 4 30 pm and 8 00 pm at the fair grounds. Sponsored by the Hidalgo County Sheriffs Posse proceeds fund a youth activity.

Local Draft Board Offices Retained After Action

Selective Service says earlier plans to close the local draft board offices were rescinded by congressional action. The local office will be kept on a part time basis with schedules pending. Previous plans to merge with the Silver City office and move records there have been abandoned.

Manuel V. Renteria Named LULAC of Year

Manuel V. Renteria was elected local LULAC of the year by Lordsburg LAULAC Council No. 258 at a regular meeting. This is his second such honor, with a prior state LULAC of the Year award six years ago in Chicago.

Restrict Forest Use Due To Fire Danger

Gila National Forest imposes additional restrictions due to critical fire conditions. A proclamation by Supervisor Dick Johnson takes effect Thursday April 15 restricting motor vehicle travel to maintained roads and designated areas. Overnight camping is limited to developed campgrounds listed and campfires require permits or occur only at those sites. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas or on surfaced roads.

City Council Approves 400000 Bond for Sewage Plant

The City Council unanimously authorized a 400000 bond issue to fund a new sewage disposal plant, water line rebuilds from wells east of town, and related work with an expected project cost not exceeding 200000. Marvin Harper was appointed to fill a council vacancy. The council discussed purchasing Cureton farm land and five water wells for 75000, with pipe work to connect to the transmission line.

Hiway Commission Owens Meet Here

Visiting state highway department commissioners and officials toured Lordsburg with a buffet dinner at the American Motor Inn. Mayor Betty Sevar Lt Col Victor Lazar and others hosted a cocktail party. L G Boles spoke for the department and a plaque honored former commissioner Holm Bur sum.

Chamber Of Commerce Board Meeting Held

The April meeting was led by Mr. Boyd Harper due to Mr. Glenn Dorsett illness. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hunt from Tyrone New Mexico. Letters read included a Bangkok Thailand inquiry seeking lodging and area leaflets. A Carlsbad workshop is set for May 6 7 and 8 with a potential Dorsett attendance. A membership drive was announced and brochure samples were shown.
