Observers report on a primary race featuring candidates Thelma Inmon and Luis Saucedo with J Armijo and Max candidates from Alamogordo and Silver City. Voters are urged to back Richard B. Rice for commissioner as the budget and tax stance draws county attention.
Amenado Post 29 American Legion of Animas and the Animas Civil Air Patrol join a dance on April 21 in the Animas Hall. The event is a political rally with no candidates invited and is priced higher than prior dances due to no profit last year. Music by Rhythm.
District Judge George Reese Jr. of Roswell was appointed by Chief Justice Compton to hear the city election recount contest filed by Eugene P. Noce and Francisco H. Chaires Jr. The recount concerns alleged illegal votes and a 22 vote margin for Fred Ewing over Noce and a 32 vote edge for Foy Powell over Chaires.
Harber Heather, newly elected mayor of Lordsburg, is tri county chairman of the Mead for Governor Club in Hidalgo Grant and Luna Counties in southwestern New Mexico. Heather, a mortician, is a long time Lordsburg resident active in Democratic circles. He backs Sen Mead for the May 8 primary citing leadership and business credentials.
A school fundraiser appeals for 93 dollars to finish financing a transportation bus for Wilson and Southside students to the cafeteria for hot lunches. The Parent-Teacher Association treasurer administers funds, contributions go to Mrs. Charles Williams, credit is given to civic groups and individuals who supported the drive.
Roping at the Fairgrounds invites interested posse ropers to join Wednesday evening activities from 4 30 to 7 00 and Sunday afternoons from 3 30 to quitting time. Non members may rope for 25 cents a head or one dollar per afternoon with one loop at the head or out.
Adair Merrell, chair of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau Labor Committee, argues against Senator Harrison Williams's national farm labor recruitment bill. He warns it would expand federal power, perpetuate migration, and risk crop loss by mandating costly worker housing and transport with few worker protections.
The University of Arizona Symphonic Band will present a concert at Lordsburg High School Gym on Thursday April 26 at 9 a.m. Sharon Bowman, a 1961 graduate, will perform and Lordsburg band parents will serve breakfast at the Cafetorium before the concert. A nominal charge covers breakfast and incidental expenses. The public is invited.
Newly elected Mayor Harber J. Heather and aldermen Rudy Chavez Fred Ewing Fay Powell and Bill Kimbley took office after a brief meeting of the outgoing administration. The council organized with holdover members and appointed officers and committees to begin tasks including summer Little and Pony League programs and Chamber of Commerce cooperation. The body approved hires and policy steps including water rate adjustments and rabies vaccinations for pets.
Voting machines have been set up in the Community Public Service Office and the Chamber of Commerce office for the public to familiarize themselves with operation. A demonstration machine is also displayed at the county clerk's courthouse.
Peace Corps tests will be held Saturday April 21 at Civil Service Commission centers nationwide. In this area the Silver City Post Office hosts the 8:30 a.m. session. Applicants may train for 30 new Peace Corps projects in Africa Asia and Latin America with spaces available for unfilled questionnaires. One test covers teacher positions and the other serves general applicants for corps service. Some projects need technical skills while many require no formal training. Liberal arts graduates are sought for community development and farmers for agricultural projects.
A few members played in the Sunday local golf tournament aimed at boosting interest in the game. Because turnout did not exceed last year, plans for an invitational event with Silver City, Ft. Bayard and Hurley were canceled. Traveling trophy went to Bearl Dunkerson and Marshall Kuykendall won a prize.
A daughter named Stephanie Ann was born Monday April 16 to Mr. and Mrs. Mack Pace of T or C. The baby weighed seven pounds thirteen ounces and has a brother named Stephen. The mother is the former Connie Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scofield.
Werner Lake Nickel Mines of Toronto plans up to 100000 dollars for extensive underground work at the Henry Clay and Atwood copper mines near here. Brannon and Fuller operate the sites as lessees with 1961 royalty payments totaling 21685 dollars. Development will focus on the Emerald vein from 800 to 1250 feet.
A meeting to plan and organize the Little League and the Pony League will be held Monday evening at 8 p m in City Hall. Anyone interested in sponsoring or managing a team is urged to attend.
