A City Council meeting approved a street agreement and noted a resignation from Fr. Kinkema as civil director. The discussion included payments above trade in for a newly purchased vehicle and motions related to city expenditures. Mayor Koff announced the resignation and council action proceeded.
Hidalgo County Board met to discuss land title for the donated hospital site and plan for construction bids. Officials expect a clear title soon and approved calling bids for building the facility. A special session on April 23 was set to issue the law for the primary and name the election.
Abies S Hernandez will head the Peace Corps Community Cement project in the Dominican Republic, with fellow corpsmen to start a two year assignment in July. He has spent two years in Guatemala development work and will be accompanied by his wife Amelia Anaya of Santa Rosa New Mexico and their 13 year old son Isidro.
Temperature readings here were recorded by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The note lists measured values and times, indicating a data log from a station along the line.
Eugene W. Howard was returned to Phoenix to face kidnapping charges after being arrested by Undersheriff Leroy McCarty in the clerk’s office. He allegedly forced his ex wife into a car for a remarriage and carried a gun in the vehicle. Police also aided border patrol in a separate arrest on a murder-suspect freight train.
At a Historical Society gathering last Thursday three guests from Silver City spoke on Map Cave. The interpreters described Map Cave’s meaning its use by a medicine man and related pre ceremonials and religious rites. The cave resembles a map with drawn trails and symbols.
Voting machines have been set up in the Community Public Service Office and the Chamber of Commerce to let the public learn how they operate. A demonstration model is also shown at the county clerk's courthouse office.
WSCS held April 10 at the parsonage with hosts Mrs. Strickland and Mrs. Twurrentine. A five act play titled The Greatest Drama Ever Written was presented. Members voted to install church lights and discussed a rummage sale, with $115.74 reported by the treasurer. Officers to be nominated May 1 and installation planned for May 20.
At the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Upsilon Chapter No 893 meeting held April 10 at Joyce Davis home plans were finalized for a rummage sale in Slicks old building on Saturday April 14. M Morrison president of the First National Bank gave an informative talk. Attendees included Mrs Jewell Johnson Eva Rusk Hazel Kinkema Shirlene Davis Norma Dunagan Frances Gauthier Hazel Amis Barbara Schmuck Betty Norton and host Joyce Davis with guest Mr Morrison and Mrs Fay Buvens.
Lt. Col. William R. Poindexter, stationed in Italy and Germany for three years, will arrive in the United States around July. He and his family will report to Montgomery Alabama for the Air War College on August 2 and may spend time in New Mexico beforehand.
Francis co H Chaires Jr and Eugene P Noce defeated aldermen candidates file for a recount of votes. Bonds set at 10000 each. Officials subpoenaed for April 20. Thirty two alleged illegal voters cited. Backing cited from Greater Lordsburg ticket and city administration. Attorney General opinion impacts registration and franchise in the election.
Lordsburg High School athletes were feted at a dinner in the cafetorium hosted by the Boosters Club. Jim Smith, former Lordsburg coach and current New Mexico Western basketball coach, spoke on benefits of athletics. The program included remarks by Superintendent Wesley Freeburg Principal B. B. McAlister and others.
Mrs Darrell Brooks of Virden was elected chairman for 1963 at the District II Extension Club Association meeting in Las Cruces on April 5. She has chaired Virden Extension Club in 1962 and serves as State Safety Chairman. Her background includes Hidalgo County Extension Council offices and 4-H leadership. she will begin duties in early June.
Mrs Loyd Reed of Lordsburg was chosen vice chairman of the District III Women's Extension Club Association for 1963. She has been active in the Land Club and 4-H leadership in Lordsburg and has served on multiple committees. Reed has been Hidalgo County Extension Council treasurer and completed its former chair term. She begins duties in early June 1962.
LULAC Chapter No. 258 elected officers on April 2 with C. Altuna Jr. as president and Herbert Saucedo as vice president. Alberto Lopez serves as secretary Friseo Reynoso treasurer Arturo Saucedo chaplain Any Moreno guardian guide. trustees Manuel De La Garza Edward A. Diaz Ernesto Renteria. Delegates chosen for the state convention in Alamogordo April 28–29. about 20 members plan to attend as guests.
LULACS presents Chapala Mariachi's in Lordsburg at La Fiesta Club on Saturday April 21 starting 9 p m. The ten-member group famed as Jua rez Mexico's best will perform for one hour after two Tardiada events at Plaza Del Norte Park from 5 to 7 p m. A taco sale is planned and table reservations are available at Saucedo's Food Market.
