The county races bring more candidates than usual with at least two contenders for most offices. Democrats dominate Hidalgo County, while a single Republican faces off for state representative. Strong campaigns and campaign cards appear citywide as voters prepare for a bitter race.
A breakfast meeting at the Hidalgo Shop on April 12 brought together Putnam, P D Gordon, Frank Robinson, James Hall, Leo Colton, B R G Lynn Hatch, Ed H Hit Marguerite Codding and others. The group discussed plans for a new recreation area at San Simon Lake with officials from the State Engineer Office Soil Conservation Game and Fish Department and U S Fish and Wildlife. The Chamber of Commerce and city officials met with New Mex and Fish Department staff to pursue the project, aiming for completion in 1956.
Ter Basin Lt. Putman of the State Office in Deming announces free small maps of the Animas and Underground Water Basin. Maps are available at Putman’s office in Deming and are intended for those who desire them.
Registration opened at 8 30 A M in the Coronado Theatre with coffee and doughnuts. Mrs E Rourk opened the meeting at 10 A M, followed by remarks from District Chairman Mrs Lawrence Shelley and led by Mrs T T McDonald. The High School band performed two numbers and a panel discussion featured State President Mrs Leste James and State Home Agent Miss Elsie Cunningham. Luncheon at the American Legion Hall for District III members at noon.
Fire Chief Harold Bishop of the Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Department will test the fire siren Friday at 6 PM. He requests the public not call to report fires during the test.
Twenty five students competed at Lordsburg Junior High to determine who represents the school in the Herald Post Spring Bee. Sonny Madrid won first prize with Franklin Hood in second and Fran Raymond third. The El Paso event is set for April 27 and 28 with cash awards for top four places.
Saturday night in the Lordsburg School Cafeteria a banquet honored former administrators and retired teachers. Wes Bree, master of ceremonies, led a program attended by the current school board, administrators, faculty, and staff. F. H. A. girls served a ham menu as the event followed a spring motif with sweet pea decor.
Nant To My amen Carrett and 94 At School Th Lordsburg High School Senior Band will present pins Band Concert Saturday April 21 at 8 P M in the High Cohen Study hall. The program will be venied and will feature Hoagy Carmichael Star Dust Bagby’s familiar Emblem March Brahms Hymn of Freedom and a paraphrase arrangement of Chop Sticks. This will be the 7th in a series of con es by the Senior Band for the year under director Roger Brandt.
State officials including Governor John Simms and Vearle Peyne with Lordsburg and Silver City leaders will attend a April 29 dedication at City of Rocks State Park in Grant County. The event features a family picnic, bands from Silver City Cobre and Deming, and speeches by Simms and State officials.
Property owners must order driveway or sidewalk work before forms are set on their block. Pouring of curb and gutter begins on 6th Street Monday April 9. Contact J. W. Jones Construction Co. at 504 Pyramid or call 73. J. P. Crippen, Engineer in Charge.
Rapid grading curbing and gutter work surges through Lordsburg as crews install water and gas lines and reset poles. The project, progressing west of Penr Burget from Sixth to Second, aims to pave all business and most residential streets at low cost to property owners.
The Lordsburg Indians suffered their second defeat of the season as Deming beat them 13 to 4. Iguera pitched three scoreless innings for Lordsburg while Chester pitched for Deming. Lordsburg rallied to three runs early but was held silent the rest of the game as Deming pulled ahead with a two run fourth inning and continued the scoring.
Veterinarian Dr. Kelly of Deming will visit Lordsburg on Saturday forenoon April 28 from 6 to 1% to vaccinate cats and dogs. Owners should bring pets to the fire hall during that window.
