County Roads Are Upgraded By John Schimmel

County roads in the Lordsburg area received upgrades including Winery Road from the Muir overpass to San Andres Vinyards and the Glen Acres entrance via Lee Trevino and Ben Hogan Drives. Improvements financed by a 168000 dollar School Bus Co op grant funded by the New Mexico Highway Department.

Ballinger Re-Trial Dealt Another Blow By Courts

Gene Ballinger a former Lordsburg resident seeks a new trial after 2nd degree murder conviction in 1981. The state Court of Appeals proposes to affirm Judge Norman Hodges's denial of a new trial citing withheld photograph and newspaper coverage as grounds. Judge Hendry notes the memorandum of opposition was considered and again denied. Ballinger has remained free during appeals.

Lordsburg Adopts Overtime Pay Policy for City Employees

In a special Tuesday night meeting the Lordsburg City Council approved an overtime pay policy for city employees. The measure, submitted by the Municipal League, sets compensation for staff required to work beyond regular hours.

Robbers Sentenced In Deming and Area Cracking Down

Sheriff Billy Darnell reports Noe Gonzales and Wilfrendo Falco will be sentenced in Deming on Thursday April 17 for the Rusty Walter residence robbery in Animas. The caretaker suffered a broken arm and cuts. Darnell outlines patrol funding from the Forest Service amounting to 9000 for cooperation and 2500 for illegal forest land use, plus vehicle and fuel allocations. Roadblocks and public drinking crackdowns are planned, with patrols through parks and routes to the ball park, plus overtime provisions and potential policy amendments. Funeral Mass held for Ramon Silvas Rivera. Dave Diaz withdraws from state representative race in District 39 amid residency challenge.
