Mayor Hill proposed step raises, while discussions addressed whether six officers plus the Chief suffice. Councilman Sanders urged higher staffing and funding priority for police protection. Local chambers seek funds in county budget

Mejia Heads Second Torch Run for Special Olympics
Hidalgo County Deputy Richard Mejia is named regional director for the second annual law enforcement torch run benefiting Special Olympics. The statewide relay ends at New Mexico summer games opening in Albuquerque on May 30, starting May 27 in Lordsburg at 7:00 a.m. The event is sponsored by Armour Food Companies and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, with Good Sam Club and Ed Mariano serving as honorary chairman.

Rabies Clinic Set In Lordsburg This Saturday
The City of Lordsburg hosts a rabies clinic Saturday April 18 at the Lordsburg Fire Station from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All dogs and cats over three months must be vaccinated annually and licensed under Ordinance 4-1-4. Fines up to 300 dollars may be issued for dogs at large. Registration for 1987-88 Kindergarten is April 21 at 9:15 a.m. Parents must bring birth certificates and immunization records.

Chickering Piano Returns Home to Lordsburg
The Chickering concert grand piano once in the old high school auditorium was delivered back to Lordsburg on Saturday night after last minute scheduling changes. Arrangements, aided by the Lordsburg School Board, placed the instrument on the Central School gym stage. Acquired by the Lordsburg PTA in 1929, paid off in 1933, it later moved to private hands before being repurchased.
