Candidates File For County Positions In Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County Clerk Becky Diaz reported candidates filed by 5 p.m. for county posts including magistrate, three county commissioner districts, clerk, treasurer, assessor, sheriff and probate judge. State representative filings are delayed due to an injunction on reapportionment.

Stolen Gas Check Explained in Lordsburg Burglary

Lordsburg City Clerk Lupe Rivera explained that a stolen check for 480 863.58 to El Paso Natural Gas Co covered one month of gas service, February, not a full year. The 1981-82 budget funded 3 496 674 for natural gas, with the clerk also reporting the loss of her Notary Public seal and county personnel records.

Lordsburg School Board considers road fixes and bus purchases

Lordsburg Municipal School Board met to discuss bus routes and a possible new activity bus for 1982 93 with costs ranging from 27000 to 65000 dollars. They approved writing four weeks prior notices to parents when a student is retained and noted the decision credits the principal and teacher with the retention judgment. Superintendent Dr Joel Price said the state allocated about 4 million dollars for bus route road improvements and asked drivers to report conditions. The board also debated sending vocational students to Western New Mexico University for welding and mechanic training next year.

Fuller Services Held for Vangie Fuller in Lordsburg

Evangelyn Kathleen Butterfield, born October 15 1893 in Sparta Wisconsin, died March 15 in Hillcrest General Hospital Silver City after three weeks as a patient. She lived 34 years in Lordsburg, married to Claude Fuller a retired veterinarian who died in December 1949 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery. Surviving daughters Gayle Havel of Houston Gene Nave of Denver and Meredith Casey of Billings plus two brothers Ward Butterfield of Alamogordo and Bob Butterfield of San Jose. five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 18 at Heather Chapel with Rev David Snyman officiating, burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Malone Toby Wallace Kenneth Moore Vic Lazar Tommy McCants and Bobby Reynolds.

Phelps Dodge Corp suspends copper production at its U S mines and three Arizona smelters effective April 17, lasting at least until June 1 with potential extension. Hidalgo smelter in New Mexico will stay open to fulfill toll smelting commitments and process copper precipitates. About 3,800 workers to be laid off. plants can produce 350,000 tons annually under full operation. The company cites copper prices at 30 year lows and recession. expects to resume when conditions improve and will supply inventories to manufacturing during shutdown.

Maura Rico A Hidalgo County candidate barred from filing in District 39

Lordsburg resident Maura Rico announced a bid for New Mexico State Representative District 39 but was not allowed to file after a federal judge blocked state primaries. The ruling cited an undercount in Hidalgo County and one person one vote issues from the 1982 reapportionment. Rico plans to monitor the injunction outcome while noting District 39 now includes Lordsburg Virden Road Forks Silver City and Grant County. Officials warned June primaries may be postponed pending the case.

Altamirano visits Lordsburg in bid for Congress

State Senator Ben D. Altamirano of Silver City, representing Catron and Grant Counties, met constituents at the Lordsburg Civic Center after a Washington trip. He said he attended the Hispanic Conference on Foreign Policy, seeking background on Reagan era foreign policy. The conference was sponsored by the State Department and Haig issued invitations with six ambassadors speaking.

EID completes Lordsburg food service inspection survey

The Environmental Improvement Division finished standardization surveys of Hidalgo Grant and Luna counties to gauge sanitization levels in Lordsburg. Eleven establishments including six restaurants and two meat markets were inspected led by Gus Werner and David Rees with an average Lordsburg score of 77 and 1.7 major violations per site.

Tyrone Mine Tours To Begin On Daily Basis

Tyrone Branch of Phelps Dodge will offer daily public tours starting April 7. Tours run Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. at the General Office Building main entrance and last about two hours. Notify the coordinator at 538-5331 extension 112 to book, with advance calls for large groups.
