Mexico Police report a possible theft of 485.00 from a Detroit wallet tied to John Ivory Company in Lordsburg. Paul Niriden alias Stevens reportedly disappeared last Friday after a wallet was found missing, with authorities noting a note left on page 4.
County officials announce the annual school budget hearing for 9 AM Wednesday in the county court building. The 1954-55 budget proposals, including state funds and local estimates, will be outlined by school officials and board members. Residents are urged to attend to review anticipated income and expenditures for the new school year.
The Allen Grocery Store on Atham Street is being enlarged by an 11 by 26 addition built by Ed win Brown Construction Company of Lordsburg. A new plate glass front will replace the old facade and cement block construction will expand floor space while business continues as usual.
Sheriff and under sheriff confirmed the unidentified man found along the highway near Lordsburg is Joseph Edward Lewis Jr. Born in Elk County Kansas, he lived as a wanderer, with stints in Louisville and a 1953 drunk charge in Long Beach. He was 32. bruises suggest a struggle and a coroner’s jury noted possible foul play. Continued on Page 3.
A statewide SARCAP search and rescue exercise conducted by the New Mexico Wing and multiple squadrons took place in Las Cruces over Saturday and Sunday. overseen by March Field California authorities with NM Wing leaders from Albuquerque and Las Cruces in charge of various operational roles to train crews for real emergency missions.
Lordsburg schools urge parent cooperation for the annual Spring Round-Up at Central School on Saturday April 24 from 9 to 11 AM. Children entering Central or Wilson next September should attend with parents for visits, first grade teacher meetings, physical and dental checks, and immunizations.
The Big Horn Game Protective Association held its April 8 meeting at the junior high school. Elected directors include Percy Brown Harold Rolfe Roddy Poindexter Rex Kipp Earle Kerr Leo Cohen Earl Huntington and Jewell Butler of Silver City.
Lordsburg track team travels to Deming Relays after a fast White Sands meet where Don McAlister tied for fourth in pole vault and the quarter mile placed fifth while the mile saw a strong second. Strong field from eighteen schools included top state athletes.
Lordsburg opens its first drive in theatre on Sunday April 17 with a premiere of Stalag 17 featuring William Holden Don Taylor and Otto Preminger. The Chief Drive In sits three miles east on Highways 70 and 80 and serves 225 cars with a three weekly change schedule and a full concession stand.
With the 1954 Easter Seal appeal drive sponsored by the local K P lodge entering its fourth and concluding week, funds totaling 240.00 have been received by Miss Gladys Sapp and Frank Bowman. Last year the total contributions exceeded 400.00. So far this year the receipts are only slightly over half the 1953 total as organizers urge unpaid recipients to send in their money so the drive can close on Easter Sunday.
