Increased Cost Of Police Protection Explained At Meet
A Lordsburg representative learned from Hidalgo County officials that several factors drive the coming year’s police protection price rise. Mayor Pro-tem Stephen Hill asked about the $50,000 increase over last year’s charge of about $99,000 under a joint powers agreement expiring in June. Sheriff Gene Moore noted omissions in the original contract such as car insurance, officer liability, and unemployment insurance, with rising gasoline and other costs. He emphasized the sheriff’s department does not profit from the agreement and any unspent funds would be returned to the city.
