Community groups urge residents to back the American Cancer Crusade during April. Local organizers emphasize donations, volunteers, and events to aid cancer research and patient support across partners and clinics.
A daily Southern Pacific freight run between Lordsburg and Clifton derailed near the U S 70 overpass in Lordsburg on Wednesday night. Four sulphuric acid tank cars left the track as misalignment bent rails and tore up crossties. A wrecking train from El Paso helped lift and replace broken trucks with new units, restoring service.
CH47A Chinook helicopters from the 190th Aviation Company based in Olathe Kansas refueled in Lordsburg over the past week on their way to maneuvers near Riverside California. Major Thomas Staadt says 17 aircraft have stopped here with two more expected after wind delays caused rotor damage. The Chinook, built by Boeing, carries a crew of three to five and moves troops weapons and supplies or evacuates the wounded during frontline operations.
Sunday afternoon 23 Lordsburg residents rode in the American Diabetes Association Bike-a-Thon with two diabetic youths Michael Lowry and Michael Walker among participants. Joyce Frazier led the event, assisted by Candy Mesa Linda Walker and Chavo Martinez in registration as contestants gathered pledges for the ride.

The Transportation Department announces a new year round registration program effective April 1, 1982. New and used vehicle buyers join at title time, receive a new license plate and month year sticker. All registrations run 12 months with no grace period, penalties after expiration, and renewal due within the assigned month. The rollout spans 5 to 8 years to cover 1.1 million vehicles. until then, owners remain in the current annual renewal system due by March 2.
Former Governor Jerry Apodaca names Eddie Diaz to coordinate his Senate campaign in Hidalgo County. Diaz self employed and will carry the campaign message to Lordsburg Hidalgo County with his wife Becky serving as Hidalgo County Clerk. They have three children.
Phelps Dodge Corporation announced an immediate price drop for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes from 76 cents to 74 cents per pound. The move lowers input costs for manufacturers using copper cathodes in production.
A regular meeting of the Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education is set for April 6 at 7 p.m. in the board room of Lordsburg Municipal Schools located at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg.
The Hidalgo County Commissioners meeting has been rescheduled to April 13 Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Courthouse. The notice specifies a public session and location unchanged from prior announcements.
Hidalgo Police traced a distress call from a man at a Deming truck stop alleging his vest was left on a Continental bus. Officers Arrendondo and the driver found the vest on the bus in Lordsburg revealing a 380 semi automatic Lama pistol and marijuana. The weapon matched a NCIC record as wanted. Deming was alerted to locate the caller, the gun is detained in Lordsburg and the man is in custody in Deming.
The Design and Planning Assistance Center at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning is conducting a study on energy conservation and historic preservation in owner-occupied elderly housing in Grant Hidalgo and Luna Counties.
Due to higher production costs and increased mailing rates the Lordsburg Liberal annual subscription rose from 10.00 to 12.50 starting January 1, 1982. Some subscribers paid the old rate and will receive the Liberal, while a separate statement will bill the extra 2.50 for those who paid 10.00.
Dr Wallin will be out of town April 2 through April 6 to attend a medical conference.
Bill Collins of Freeway Chevron hosts a large Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday April 11 at 1 p.m. with over 60 dozen eggs hidden around the station. Top three egg finders win toy stuffed animals. prizes visible in the Freeway Chevron showroom. A swap meet runs during the event with free cakes and mingling. Freeway Chevron lies off exit 24 on the east side of Lordsburg.
