Zoning Contract Get $12 000 More in Hidalgo Vote

Hidalgo County Commissioners approved a $12,000 surcharge for Potter and Associates on top of $92,000 initially agreed. The firm rewrote the land use ordinance, making it nearly a new bill. Some audience members opposed payment, suggesting DA language input. Councilman Maura Rice moved to accept the extra fee. Attempt To Replace Police Chief Fails

Lordsburg mayor Diaz failed to appoint John McDonald as Chief of Police after a 4-2 vote with two abstentions during the council meeting. This marks the second failed bid following a prior attempt to appoint Ali Salinas Jr. The poll drew responses from multiple council members as the debate continued.

Sheriff Candidate Registration Challenged

Hidalgo County Sheriff hopeful Lisandro Salinas faces a challenge to his June 5 primary ballot entry as officials dispute his voter registration timing. A restraining order keeps his name on the ballot until a district court hearing by Judge Lee Vesely, with County Clerk Missy Morelos and defense by Jim Foy and firm. Salinas runs as a Democrat.

Lordsburg will close after lunch on Friday April 13 1990 as city operations pause for the Easter weekend. Police warn against drinking and driving with roadblocks planned and traffic laws to be obeyed for a safe holiday.

Knights of Pythias Easter Festivities Announced

The Knights of Pythias sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 14 at Hidalgo County Fairgrounds with hundreds of eggs hidden by a giant Easter Rabbit. Activities include a bicycle contest at the western Bank parking lot, an Easter Bonnet contest, and a coloring sheet program for area schools. Prizes will be awarded for special silver or gold eggs and best bonnets. Harvey Lang invites all area children to participate.

Easter drama and cantata offered by local churches

The First United Methodist Church presents The Third Day Easter drama at 11:00 with cast including Jim and Dinah Culberson and Ron Brewer, performed annually at Caprock Theater in San Jon. First Baptist hosts a mini cantata Sunday April 15 at 6:00 PM. Admission is free. Also a Haggadah Seder at First United Methodist on Thursday with a Passover bread breaking ritual, advance notice required by calling 542-3796.

The Lordsburg Ministerial Alliance sponsors an Easter Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday April 15 at 6 00 a m south of Lordsburg. Participants include pastors from Apostolic Church Abundant Life Fellowship Assembly of God First Baptist First United Methodist and The Christian Home along with an Easter Breakfast at the Methodist Church afterward. A contribution is appreciated and the public is invited.
