Mrs. Emma Long Marks 84th Birthday

Mrs. Emma Taylor Long celebrated her 84th birthday on Tuesday while continuing to run a boarding house for the aged. She told friends her grandmother lived to 110 and she hopes to emulate that longevity.

Frank C. Gabriel of Roswell has been named administrator of Hidalgo General Hospital and started duties this week. He is 60, with a 35 year hospital career, a University of Illinois graduate, and has held top roles in New Mexico and national hospital associations.

Sears Awards Nine NMSU Scholarships For Seniors

Sears Roebuck Foundation offers nine three hundred dollar scholarships to entering freshmen in agriculture and home economics at New Mexico State University. Eight are for male students, one for a female in home economics. Applications due April 15 to Dr. J V Enzie at University Park.

Cotton Extravaganza Seeks Contestants in Hidalgo County

Applications are open for the Cotton Extravaganza style show contest set for April 23 at the Cafetorium. The Sew-So Extension Club of Animal sponsors a wardrobe loan from the National Cotton Council Calvacade of Cotton. Tim Arends will report on new cotton fabrics. Entrants must be Hidalgo County residents and entries must be 100 percent cotton and modeled by the contestant or someone they select. Judging covers appearance across multiple categories. County Assessor Directs Reassessment Of Farms In 1964

Animas Valley farmers who appealed 1964 tax assessments won a partial victory with land revalued under new guidelines. The State Tax Commission ordered two classes of farm land, cotton allotment and non allotment, with Class I at 45 per acre and Class II at 15 per acre.
