Bad Weather Hampers Southwest Area Fishing

Williams Transfers To U S Customs Bureau

Robert A. Williams Sr a longtime Lordsburg postmaster since 1958 shifts to the U S Customs Bureau in El Paso to serve as an export control guard. He begins April 15 after last day at the post office April 2 with 20 years in government service.

Governor's Conference Held In Albuquerque

The second annual Governor's Conference met in Albuquerque with tours and workshops on tourism and recreation. Speakers included J Hoffman Department of Development director and Jack Campbell Interior Under-secretary, Carver Jr. and Dykeman. The event featured Thunderbird Dancers from Carlsbad and a UNM variety show after the banquet. Lordsburg Chamber representatives Ewing and Franklin Hood attended.

Student Council Convention Brings NM Youth To Tucumcari

About 1,000 high school and junior high students from New Mexico arrive in Tucumcari for a three day State Convention starting March 25. Lordsburg sending nine students with sponsors, sessions and clinics planned, plus social events including a Get Acquainted Party, dances, a Pit Barbecue Supper, and a final dance at the Youth Center.

New Mexico Driving Rodeo Selections Announced

H S Students chosen as contestants in the New Mexico Driving Rodeo include James Richardson Scotty Jones and Sherri Huna all sophomores or seniors. The event spans two days with written skills and road tests judged by officials from the New Mexico Bus Drivers Association the New Mexico Carriers Association the State Department of Education and the State Police. Western New Mexico University sponsors the rodeo with scholarships and trophies for winners.

Jesse L. Nard Dies After Long Illness

Jesse L. Nard died at his home on Tuesday April 6 after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Friday April 9 at 2 p.m. in Heather Chapel with Rev. Don Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Hidalgo County Fair Board and Old Timers Association held a second meeting to set a parade theme Legends and Fairy Tales of Long Ago with Mrs. Victor Lazar as parade chair. Officials seek more float entrants and announce trophies for junior and senior divisions. An advertising committee will coordinate publicity.

Explorer Post Plans Camporee at Jack's Peak

Explorer Post 120 held its regular meeting on Tuesday April 6. They discussed the upcoming Search and Rescue Camporee at Jack's Peak from April 9 through 10, with Order of the Arrow and Post 120 boys participating as victims. Paul Ragland leads Personal Fitness, Eugene Flickinger Vocational Activities, and David Baker Social for the first phase of the three explorer experiences.
