Large crowd erupts when suffragettes attempt to rush police and scenes of violence occur as comrades seek to free prisoners. Reports describe chaotic clashes and attempts to rescue detainees amid crowded streets and police response.
London May 21 Forty suffragettes led by Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst were arrested in a riot at Buckingham Palace as militants and police clashed amid calls for access to the King. Several sympathizers detained. Pankhurst among those taken into custody after attempts to reach the palace.
A meeting of the Lincoln Protective Tariff League at Allenhurst last night elected a board of trustees. The list includes Henry G. Johnston Charles K. Savage Thomas Cochran Arthur Steinbach W. H. Burroughs A Sussman Wm H. Woolley Benjamin B. Smith. After adjournment to Deal Golf Club members enjoyed a social time. A telegram was sent Congressman Scully outlining the League objects, stating it is nonpartisan. The Congressman was asked to present the message to President Wilson.
New York May 21 The Becker murder case defense rested at eleven this morning with Harford T Marshall the final witness. He denied Bridgie Webber the informer gave him up because he was paid by Becker. The state also rested. The judge's charge is expected tomorrow morning before the jury deliberates. Mrs Packer elected a delegate Sea Bright resident Mrs P Hall Packer was chosen to represent New Jersey at the National Council for a three year term. Auto Bus Line changes add daily trip to Oakhurst Sea Bright from Second Avenue at 8 pm with return at 8 40 pm. Relatives gather at the Lyceum Theatre for graduation exercises honoring five nurses from Monmouth Memorial Training School. The event features remarks by former Mayor Thomas R Woolley and presentations by Dr Scudder Woolley and others, boosting total graduates to 110 with classes listed back to 1808.
At St Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church a large Epworth League gathering of about 110 attendees fostered enthusiasm for forming a league chapter. Speakers included Ard Price Rev Harry Ketterer and Rev George Harris, with a tonic talk on Christian conquest. A future organizational night will invite interested members to join.
The Academic Literary Society of Chattle High announces tomorrow night's reunion with literary and social features. Lawyer Henry D Brinley chairs the evening as Prof Gregory attends to share remarks on past achievements and future prospects. Prof Ball's orchestra plays two steps and waltzes for dancing after formal sentiments from Miss Hague and Miss Rees plus varsity quartet selections. Continued on Fifth Page.
Trenton reports from the New Jersey State Board of Health indicate a decline in the scarlet fever outbreak. Dr Clark Hunt states indications point to total elimination within a month aided by warm weather, sanitation, quarantine, and responsible parents, while noting unsettled views on reporting measles.
In Trenton on May 21 Charles McNab said tuberculosis in meat animals has fallen from 19 to 11 percent year over year. He noted about 1,900 cases will be killed this year starting January. A New York and Long Branch Railroad inspection tour followed, with stops at Point Pleasant, Asbury Park, and Long Branch.
The Christian Endeavor Society of Oceanic Presbyterian Church will host a social tomorrow at the church house. A musical program includes vocal and instrumental selections. Rev. A. A. McKay, pastor, will operate a self designed “Pigtataphone.”

The Teachers' Association hosted a well attended spring social at the Intermedial gymnasium with each district school contributing acts. Grammar, Broadway, Garfield and High school groups performed choir pieces recitations and a witty parody while Miss Waters impressed with Dunbar and Miss McAllister led a “class of boys” segment. Bowling lunch boxes and punch rounded out the evening with lively participation and cheerful verdicts on the event.
Long Branch Lodge No 78 will host Past Masters Night at Masonic Hall amorrow. Visitors are expected from six district lodges and include district deputy Frank Widener Hampton. The evening features music decorations and a solo, with past masters guiding the work of the event.
Two 13 year old boys James ONeil son of John ONeil of 56th Street New York and Patrick McPartland of Vernon Avenue Ravenswood Long Island were brought home today by Constable Thomas F Lyons of the Highlands. The boys said they ran away about a month ago.
President Wilson was asked by Judge Ben Lindsey to deploy military forces to compel Colorado mine operators to submit to arbitration in the ongoing strike dispute. The White House visit highlighted Colorado’s civil war between coal miners and pinmen as women and children testified, claiming 200 lives in seven months and urging action to end the terrorism disrupting communities. Lindsey planned to confer with John D. Rockefeller Jr. in New York for cooperation. A separate report notes a driver, Charles Low, was fined for driving an unfit horse in West Long Branch.
Reverend Clifford J. Dilks, pastor of Little Silver Methodist Church, graduated from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison today. He invited his congregation to the exercises and received his diploma as he nears two years in charge, having advanced church work, upgraded facilities, and supported Boy Scout efforts.
Mrs. Charles A Poole of West Long ranch hosted her sisters for an annual gathering that doubled as her wedding anniversary celebration. A course dinner followed by a social hour was enjoyed by Mrs. Mary Mount Mrs. Whoebe Gardiner Mrs. Sarah Chamberlain and Lavinia Mount, a niece of Mrs. Mount.
At Haverstraw New York Clyde Hatalling a West Shore Railroad agent was murdered while forwarding a feared robbery warning. Robbers believed to have taken about 18 dollars. The incident cut into a distressing wire message and a separate civic notice mentions an Euchre and dance event at Odd Pelion’s Mall hosted by the D of L with undertakers ad on page 3.
John Burns won a license renewal for the American Hotel in Freehold. Joseph Siciliano renewed a wholesale license at Long Branch, with a remonstrance about summer validity. Eugene F. Pannaci renewed for Sea Bright with remonstrance over summer-only use, until September 15. Mast View House at Highlands postponed to June 4. John Leeds, charged with stealing two chickens at Asbury Park, released on suspended sentence. Israel Allger Jr and Samuel Orlando charged with assault robbery of $66.75 from George Winters. trial ongoing in Wall Township before Judge Moster. Joseph J. Hoff a leading Ocean county Republican faces sentencing after being found guilty by a long deliberating jury of bribery tied to last fall’s primary. Judge Daly will pronounce sentence next Saturday as $1,000 fine or 1 to 8 years in prison, or both, at his discretion. Former New Haven president Charles Mellen testified Roosevelt personally blocked Morse from gaining an Atlantic coastwise steamship monopoly in 1907. Mellen recounted that Roosevelt warned him to refuse the offer, promising no interference as long as he was president. Mellen also claimed government ownership of railroads is destined to come.
Jersey City native Stephen Zahray, an accomplished concert accompanist with training in America and Europe, moves with wife to Bergen Place Red Bank. Former Jersey City studio head at Morristown, associated with Ruzant wa brigian for Columbia Phonograph, claims a Columbia piano record. Zahray studied under Dr. Ernst Eberhard and Damrosch, and once managed Tasting's Piano store in Red Bank.
John Gargare, held as a suspected ring leader by New York and New Jersey police, faces sentencing by Judge Daly in Toms River tomorrow after a prior conviction. He is out on 67000 bail.
