A boiler explosion on the steamship Jefferson of the Old Dominion Line off the Virginia Capes killed seven crew members and injured several others. The vessel returned to Norfolk under her own steam and resumed toward New York after rescuing the dead and wounded.
About twenty members of Auxiliary No. 1 of Monmouth Memorial Hospital met at the Nurses' Home to arrange a May 22 card party at Library Hall and a larger June gathering at Walsh's. They will attend the Monmouth Memorial Hospital Training School Class of 1914 commencement at the Lyceum on Thursday May 21 at 3 o'clock with former Mayor Thomas R. Woolley presiding. The 1914 class includes Cornelia Wellington Mamie Barham Helen Bailey Jennie Dugan and Stafford.
Rev J A Van Derhost from Rahway is assigned to Trinity A M E Church succeeding Rev H W Cummings who is transferred to North Woodbury. Van Derhost will preach his first sermon next Sunday. Mr and Mrs Charles KE Brown and Mrs fr J Miller of Campbell Avenue and Mrs William E Miller of Overton Place visited the Soldiers' Home at Kearney on Sunday. They traveled in Mr Brown's car about ninety seven miles and called on T Dedeon Miller, formerly of this city, now an inmate who is very feeble.
Gilmore West damaged his wheel while racing it with a saw to attract a boy’s attention. He was thrown but unharmed. In a separate note, Dr. J Christopher Marks conducts the cantata Victory Divine at Intermedial School Auditorium tonight with Mrs. Christopher Gregory and Marks on two pianos.
Long Branch Council No. 246 hosted a welcome night for new deputy Rev Leslie L Hand of Milltown. Hand taught secret work to officers and members, gave a Patriot address, and discussed the order’s 62000 members. The gathering, at Odd Fellows Hall, ended after midnight with refreshments.
Baptist men from Monmouth County gather at First Baptist Church Red Bank for a conference featuring six experts in fifteen minute talks on Baptist State work. A post conference supper by the Philathea society follows in the feature room with seating for 150 men. Delegates from many churches attend and Thomas Conlson presides.
Samuel L. Bowman a concrete mason of Cedar avenue West Long Branch died after a sudden apoplexy while at supper with his family. He had just returned from digging in his garden and worked that day for Monroe V Poole Co. Funeral arrangements are set for Old First Methodist Church with Junior Mechanics and firemen to perform burial rites.
Curfew in Fair Haven will not be rung at eight. Fire Chief Van Brunt will play the curfew role in the spoof while Police Chief C Pit Worthley has rung it previously. Borough officials refused to pay bills from the firehouse after the council moved out, prompting the dispute but a peaceful resolution is hoped.
Bishop Joseph F. Berry spoke at Grace M. Church in the morning and again at First M. Church in the evening drawing large audiences.
President Wilson arrives in Washington at 7 10 a m after a hard day in New York and plans a busy schedule focusing on the Mexican situation. He will meet Charge OShaughnessey of Mexico City as part of ongoing talks.
The Long Branch Musical Club held a final dress rehearsal at Intermedial auditorium Morris avenue with Miss Margaret Harrison Frederick Martin George Carre and Dr J Christopher Marks performing in Victory Divine The second concert tonight features solos duets and orchestral parts completion of advance ticket sales prompts early arrival for best seats and support for the club’s enduring presence.
New York May 12 Becker loses a procedural point as star witness Jack Rose testifies in the case to sentence Charles Becker ex police lieutenant to death for plotting the murder of Gambl er Herman Rosenthal. Rose recounts negotiations and the motive tied to Rosenthal’s squealing. The defense argued to exclude Becker’s name, but Justice Seabury permitted the testimony. A courtroom note announced admission price 50 cents.
Monmouth County Tax Board and county assessors met at Freehold to review recent Legislature tax changes. They noted the Hillery Maximum Tax Law allows municipalities to set rates locally, the Hammond Law ends debt reduction on personal property, new collector rules permit four payments of at least ten dollars, and a bank tax plan taxes three fourths of surplus capital stock and profits after real estate deductions.
William Hanks of Red Bank was arrested after a quarrel with William Belio led to multiple stab wounds from a pocket knife. Hanks acknowledged the attack while claiming Belio approached him first. authorities detained him on grand jury bonds after a morning hearing.
Red Bank witnesses the opening of Broad Street Bazar on Saturday offering ladies and children furnishings. A corps of saleswomen welcomed visitors as the store remained crowded from early morning until late at night, with proprietor I Spritefer expressing satisfaction.
Governor Fielder announced the Dispatch Printing Company has completed printing the laws and indexes for the 1914 New Jersey legislative session. The Secretary of State’s office aided with the index, and a few records of speed were prepared. A Patrolmen's Benevolent Association meeting is posted for City Hall at 6 this afternoon.
Cleanup week began with four teams and six men under Health Officers Hall and Taber. District No 7, bounded by Grand Myrtle Shrewsbury river and Broadway, saw 40 to 50 loads hauled to the crematory dump and Dudley street. District No 8, bounded by Rockwell Atlantic Shrewsbury river and railroads, saw dumps near Pacific Edwards avenues and Troutman Creek in Sea View Avenue.
A horse owned by Israel Lazin sky of Fourth avenue was killed instantly when, while turning a team dumping soil on the Morris plot, one horse was struck by a southbound Atlantic Coast Electric Railway trolley car on Second avenue. The near horse escaped with bruises. harness broken. car unharmed.
Samuel T. Sleeper Auxiliary No. 18 of Red Bank marked its sixth anniversary with a social and dance. A flag presented by Hattie Wymbs was unfurled by Louise Cree as the audience sang The Star Spangled Banner. Josie Wymba gave the acceptance speech. Musical program featured Adele Chandler and Eveline Chandler, Joe Burrowes, a quartet, and piano by Harold A. Laron. Awards included a stein set, silk stockings, and a fancy apron. Refreshments and dancing followed. nearly $20 was cleared. The State encampment of the Auxiliary was in Atlantic City this week, with Red Bank representation by Jennie Fisher, Louise Creevier, and Hattie Wymbs.

Authorities in Plainfield New Jersey await extradition papers from New York for Yynus Walpole held on $1000 bail for taking Ruth Naylor sixteen to New York on April 1 and keeping her there without parental knowledge.
New Ming land awaits the armoured cruiser Montana bearing the bodies of Corporal Daniel of Cambridge Rufue B Percy and Walter L Watson who died at Vera Cruz. The ship left New York yesterday and is due at Charleston Navy Yard this afternoon or evening to receive tribute from New England.
Samuel L Bowman died suddenly at home in Long Branch on Monday at 6 45 PM in his 84th year. Funeral Thursday from his late residence and at 7 00 PM from First M E Church Weet Long Branch. Relatives and friends invited.
