Large crowds gathered as a funeral procession for the president moved through Vera Cruz. Business paused during the ceremonies and church bells tolled across the city as mourning rites proceeded.
President Wilson lauded nineteen boys who died at Vera Cruz, saying war is a duty fulfilled and the nation stands ready for more sacrifices if needed. He praised their example, spoke of duty amid sneers, and urged looking to the country’s future with confidence as he arrived from an earlier stop.
Work began on a new metal ceiling for the Asbury M. E. Church to prevent falling plaster. Joseph Hanaway erects scaffolding as Fred Johnson handles timing, Stratton and West carry out painting and decorating to finish a finer appearance.

The famed opera singer Lillian Nordica has died in Batavia Java at age about 77 after a long illness including pneumonia. Born Lillian Norton in Farmington Maine she discovered her voice while working in a Boston dry goods store and rose to international fame.
Retired Baptist clergyman Rev. Henry Cross died at his Red Bank home at 10 20 PM from heart trouble in his 74th year. He leaves a widow, three sons, a daughter, a step daughter, three sisters, and a host of relatives. Funeral services in Red Bank First Baptist Church and a later service in Manasquan. Interment in Manasquan. Cross had served many churches including Manasquan and St John Canada, with long ties to England and the United States.
The sermon titled Honor Thy Mother praised maternal sacrifice and cited examples from Lincoln Carlyle and other figures. It urged loyalty to mothers and to God, urging readers to keep a Mother’s Day resolve to be true to family and faith.
A monumental railway bridge at Red Bank is complete, featuring more than 10,000 tons of concrete and over 3,000,000 pounds of steel in the structure. The project marks a significant engineering achievement and expands rail capacity in the region.
Peter Murphy of Manalapan was arrested on a Manalapan to Freehold road after his car left the ditch while driving in liquor. A man drowned near Shrewsbury by Fair Haven when his boat drifted and the river was dragged for hours. The body was recovered late yesterday afternoon.
Jacob Dux a 60 year old printer living alone in Fair Haven was drowned in the Shrewsbury river near Pair Haven yesterday morning. His body was recovered in the afternoon by Joseph Parker and C P Worthley after a long search. Coroner Harpy C Way of Red Bank was notified and the body taken to his morgue. Dux had recently moved to Willow Street and planned to fish with H L Marcellius, who reported his disappearance after finding the rowboat and gasoline. He left with the gasoline for the launch and fell overboard during the pickup.
The U S Supreme Court set aside contempt convictions against Samuel Gompers John Mitchell and Father Frank Morrison in the Buck Stove and Range case finding the statute of limitations barred prosecution The 30 day sentence for Gompers and $500 fines for the others were erased. Also notes Druggist Louis Rothenberg expected to leave State Hospital soon after treatment. Bishop McFaul confirms fifty five candidates in confirmation service at Footy Cross Church with Rev John B Murray and Rev W P Tighe participating.
