Wrecked Schooner Buckley Ice-warded After Northeast Gale

A sixty mile northeast gale last night wrecked the schooner Charles K Buckley al long North Broadway. Seven lives were lost and cargo timber valued at yellow pine was hauled ashore and loaded for shipment to Elizabeth. A local youth suffered a leg injury while attempting to salvage debris as the ship broke apart and washed ashore.

Grandchild of Chief Layton Dies in Collingswood

Sympathy pours out for Chief of Police James Layton and his ill wife as a grandchild dies at the Cubberley home in Collingswood New Jersey. The infant Margaret Cubberley died after a long illness, aged about one year, while Chief Layton travels to Collingswood.

Beefsteak Supper for Minstrel Boys in Red Bank

The Red Bank Elks hosted a Beef Steak Supper for the Elks home on East Front street after the minstrel show. Guests included numerous local men and the entertainment committee led by Benjamin H. Ford. The event followed the Elks taking ownership of the house on April 1 and featured singing and a piano performance into the evening.

Newly Weds Head Automobile Parade

Upholsterer Dies in City Lock-Up

Charles Sickler, a New York upholsterer about 42, was found dead in City Hall custody by Night Sergeant L. Van Dyke. He had been brought to City Hall after a drinking episode and apparently died in his sleep during the night. Coroner Morris reported and funeral arrangements were being set by Morris Funeral Director. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Two-Masted Barge Sinks Off Atlantic City After Collision

The two masted barge Enos Soule towed by Coastwise struck Shoals six miles off the inlet and sank. Four crewmen were rescued by the Atlantic City Life Saving Crew and taken to New York aboard the Coastwise. The Enos Soule came from Newport News with a coal cargo. one death is noted elsewhere in the paper.

City budget hearing notes music funding and curb work

Commissioner Thomas W. Arrowsmith submitted the 1914 city budget totaling 229,640.20 with 7,000 for music and 1,500 for publicity while road funding remains 44,000. Reappointments for several officers were delayed two weeks and Belmont Avenue property owners urged uniform curb width. A separate Trenton suit involved Michael John in a $400 loan case with a $200 bond.

Wife charges husband attempted to kill her in Red Bank

Joseph Leonard of Red Bank was arrested on assault and battery and held for grand jury after his wife testified of a Monday night choking incident. She said she fled to a neighbor, Leonard followed with a knife, and the neighbor locked the door. She claimed twenty years of unacceptable treatment and that she supports the children while he contributes nothing.

Lost Diamonds Reported in Paris Thefts

Mrs Kay Richards of Atlantic City New Jersey reported to police that diamonds valued at $100 000 were lost in Paris on May 1. She had attended a theatre and later believed the thief may have stolen the jewels after a man opened the door of her car as she started for home.

Freeholder Board Discusses Bridge Project and Road Repairs

Melvin Vankeuren of Eatontown urged the Freeholders to address Parker's Creek bridge near Little Silver, praising the rejection of earlier bids. The board authorized new bids to raise the bridge and repair abutments. Keyport Mayor Walling presented a Horner Council resolution to place Main Street improvements under state aid, with borough pledge of ten percent funding. Bids for guard railing at Water Witch station were readvertised after specification changes, and Joseph L. Butcher of Farmingdale won the Jerseyville Hamilton gravel road project at about 3.1 miles for 10084.20. Hills improvements totaling 39081.46 were approved for payment. Janitor John Johnston of Primary School No. 1 is recovering from grip.

Vera Cruz Dead Arrive With Solace After Voyage

The hospital ship Solace with two more Vera Cruz dead and 62 sick and injured was delayed by fog and weather, expected to dock at Quarantine late and possibly reach the New York Navy Yard tomorrow morning. The two deceased are Clarence R. Hershberger of New York and Henry Pulliam of Virginia, who were wounded at Vera Cruz and died on the Solace two weeks later.
