Pioneer Elberon matron Catherine Tallman dies at 86

Mrs. Catherine Tallman widow of Ellis Tallman died at her Park avenue home in Elberon aged 86. An Ireland immigrant at 18 she helped build Elberon from barren land to a residential area and raised 36 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral at St Michael's Church Wednesday at 10 30 a.m. Interment Mount Carmel under Hyer and Flock.

Elks Ladies Night Planned at Garfield Avenue Hall

The Long Branch Elks Lodge hosts Ladies Night this Friday at the Elks Home on Garfield Avenue. Members and their partners will enjoy music and dancing with refreshments, as officials eye forming a ladies auxiliary to bolster social and fraternal activities.

Strikers Arrested Then Freed After Habeas Hearing

Twenty one Italian strikers jailed in Freehold on trespass charges were released after Judge John E. Foster granted a habeas corpus petition. Consul Felice Ronca and attorney Stephen C. Cook interceded following questions over missing commitment papers and a miswording on penalties. Investigators noted few carried weapons, despite claims of potential hostilities, as the labor action likely winds down.

Missionary Society Meets at Shrewsbury Presbyterian

A Friday night session of the Young People's Missionary Society at Shrewsbury Presbyterian Church drew many members. President Emma Holmes led the meeting on the topic Alaska with talks by Bessie Borden titled Thirty Thousand People Without a Country. Performances by Jessie and Ruth Silvers, Ida Wiederholt, Dorothy Linson, Miriam Parsons, and Eva Green preceded refreshments and social time.

Plans Complete for State Examinations in Eighth Grade

Trenton May 6 plans for the first state examinations in the eighth grade have been completed by Dr. Calvin N Kendall State Commissioner of Education. The law was amended to allow local school districts to set their own promotion rules. Examinations will be held May 13 14 15 and June 10 11 12 13 14 with two part formats including 16 questions and special credit prompts.

Mrs. Susan Hoey Dies At 79 In South Miberon

Mrs. Susan Hoey widow of Jesse Hoey formerly ran a Long Branch tailoring shop. She died after a lingering illness at the Joseph Conover place in South Miberon aged 79. Funeral services are planned for Wednesday afternoon with burial under funeral director William H. Morris Jr. in charge.

Miss Stella Russell daughter of Mrs Elizabeth Russell of Marlboro wed Garfield Grover son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Grover of Whitesville near Lakewood. The ceremony at the Baptist parsonage Red Bank was by Rev Johnson L Miner with Miss Edith Leslie Hook and Frank N Worth as witnesses. The couple left for Oceanic awaiting a house on Lafayette Street. Grover runs Rumson Dairy after buying the Rumson end of the milk business. Mrs Grover previously worked at Adlem's on Broad Street.

45th Annual Encampment of New Jersey G A R

Trenton May 6 The 45th Annual Encampment of the Department of New Jersey G A R will be held in Asbury Park June 13 and 14. The encampment opens at 10 a.m. June 13 with credential checks and badges for post commanders. A national reputation speaker program and a short parade are planned for June 14 and a Ladies of the G A R convention will meet at Hotel Cookman and Wesley Lake. Memorial day observance directives and June 14 National Flag Day notices accompany the order.
