Preliminary naturalization exams in Asbury Park charm crowd

Fourteen applicants from Monmouth County faced a preliminary naturalization examination Thursday afternoon in the Asbury Park council chamber. John A. Nash of the Philadelphia naturalization office led the session, with final exams due in Freehold within 90 days. Participants included Russians, Germans, Italians, and English residents such as Harry Grobstein, Max Waldman, Oscar Miller, Johann Kienschmidt, Joseph Fetta, Arnold Briggs, Joseph Lipack, Giuseppe Rizzo, Marco di Fiore, Thomas Brock, Johann Wilke, Luigi Mazzucca, and Luigi Blum, all in trades from Asbury Park, Fair Haven, Long Branch, Red Bank, Belmar, Belford, and Bradley Beach.

Albert L Ivins Red Bank assessor and Riverside Gun Club president won the Clinton R James Trophy by a slim margin. His total score 891 led We ward Von Kattengill and Alexander Dre Cooper among others. Prizes included a gold watch and several gold pieces, with turkeys awarded to top shooters and professionals contesting for turkey prizes.

Wilson and Bryan confer but cabinet offer isn’t made

State House, Trenton, Dec. 21. Colonel William J. Bryan met with Governor Wilson at the State House for a lengthy conference after arriving from Philadelphia. They discussed party policies and the national platform without reaching any cabinet decisions. Bryan declined to discuss the interview or specific legislation. the Governor likewise avoided cabinet particulars. Bryan plans to attend the March 4 inaugural and denied plans to open Washington offices near the White House.

Five dollars gold prize for best kept firehouse

Engineer Thomas F. Gaskill of the Oceanic Fire Engine Company won a Christmas gift of five five dollar gold pieces from City Commissioner Thomas V. Arrowsmith for having the best kept firehouse in the city. Gaskill has served since 1888 and will discuss the honor at the company’s annual meeting next Thursday.

Christmas rush at post office grows with extra staff

The Christmas rush at the post office expands as two clerks and two carriers assist the main office. Christmas Treat Plans by City Ladies Society

Arrangements for a two o'clock Monday Christmas treat for the city’s poor children were completed by the Society for the Improvement of the Poor. The Grand Theatre will host decorations, a tree, and gifts with Santa Claus on the balcony. Eight hundred children are expected, plus outdoor aid with clothing, fuel, and provisions. Donations are welcomed to Rev. Dr. Lovell or the auxiliary.

Richard Deeves Critically Ill After Appendicitis Operation

Richard Deeves, president of the Long Branch Property Holders' Association, owner of a country estate at the corner of Norwood and Canar avenues, lies critically ill at Roosevelt Hospital New York following an early week appendicitis operation. Relatives and friends are alarmed by his condition. Deeves, who married last spring in Newark, has long been a prominent local figure and recently succeeded P Sanford Rosa as head of the association.

Former Tengher Durnell Dies at Monmouth Hospital

Mrs Margretta Jones Durnell widow of J Frank Durnell died at Monmouth Memorial Hospital at noon after four weeks as patient. Born in this city she was daughter of Elizabeth and the late James Jones. She taught school after graduating from State Normal School at Trenton and last taught at Branchport. Survived by two sons Valjean and Sterling, a mother and a brother and sister William J Jones and Mrs Fred Gifford. Funeral at Elizabeth Jones residence Broadway 11 Tuesday morning.
