Washington Dec 12 The House Rules Committee approved eight hours of general debate on the Hobson resolution for a national prohibition amendment and six hours for the Mendell equal suffrage amendment, to follow after the Hobson measure is disposed of with no dissent.
Long Branch Council No. 429 Royal Arcanum expects to reach 200 members at its last meeting of the year next Tuesday in Odd Fellows Hall. The roster shows 197 members with one candidate elected for degree and two applications awaiting medical examiner Dr Orrin A Clark. An official grand officers visit by Alternate Supreme Representative William J Ammerman and Supervising Deputy Grand Regent Walter L Davis is anticipated. Oyster stews will close the meeting after the degree. The Grand Regent C Hl Haring set a 200 member goal for the year ending March 31, 1915.
Joseph Brady a mason was arrested by Patrolman Vetter on complaint of M Schneider of Rhineland Hotel. Charged with forgery he was held for a Recorder Arrowsmith hearing next Monday. A $25 check cashed with Brady name forged as Samuel Kravitz led to $24.75 change. The signer later said the name was a forgery.
In Trenton on December 12, the Democratic Senators elected Senator Charles O'Conner Hennessy of Bergen as chairman, seizing the Senate leadership for the 1915 session. Senator McGinnis of Passaic was a rival but withdrew after failing to secure a majority. Ramsey of Middlesex acted as temporary chairman while McGinnis was the candidate for Senate President and Wim L. Dill of Paterson for Senate Secretary.
The New York and Long Branch Steamboat Company elected officers at its annual meeting. New officers are Thoras G. Patten as president Henry Ver dune as vice president Walter Batton as treasurer and William C. Hayden as secretary. The New York and Monmouth Park Steamboat Company will hold its stockholders meeting next Thursday. S. I. B. & Y. Club Members are summoned to Branchport clubhouse tomorrow at 1 PM to attend funeral of late Vice Commodore Asher L. Wardell. Overstocked Sale at W. H. Woolley & Co. Wert's invites votes for favorite fireman. The Wm. Penn coal is praised for heating qualities by Kelly & Co. 280-200.
In an East Jersey League game, Chattle was routed by Red Bank 44 to 12 on the gym court before about 400 spectators, with Jacobus scoring 26 for Red Bank and Howland and Gordon contributing. The Chattle Cubs also fell 12 to 3 to Red Bank Seconds as both squads labored to find the basket in a low scoring twin bill.
Steiner and Son, Morris avenue night shirt makers, announce a stock taking and general repairs from Wednesday the 16th until the morning of January 6th when they will reopen full time. Mr. Wilcox, agent for American Express, formerly of Little Silver, has moved back to Long Branch for the winter. Also notes on a clothing sale starting today at W. H. Woolley & Co. and a Green's Hotel Cabaret event with dancing tonight and free clam chowder.
Ashland Ohio area notice invites all members of Ashland Council No 28 Jr O U A M to meet at Bowsers Tall Sea Bright church tomorrow at 7 pm. The service was postponed from last Sunday due to a storm and neighboring councils are urged to attend to support the stormstricken town. Also an advertisement notes dolls and all kinds items at Joseph Salz's Red Bank sale open until 10 pm.
Sea Bright officials deny reports that Mayor Elliott will skip Washington aid talks. He confirms plans to press for both federal and state assistance and says citizens will attend the Trenton conference in force. Representative Scully expects a Senate committee action soon.
The Long Branch Chamber of Commerce holds a special City Hall meeting to arrange a large delegation for the state conference in Trenton. President Charles C. McFaddin presides as they seek action toward a North Jersey coast protection plan, focusing on Sea Bright after this week’s storm.
Audrey Taylor daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Taylor of Norwood avenue underwent an adenoids operation today at a New York hospital after months of illness.
Rome reports Benedict prayers fail to secure holiday truce as Russia reportedly rejects plan. In Vienna it is announced that 10,000 Russian prisoners have been captured in Galicia by Austrian forces. Servians resist south of Belgrade as Austrian advances continue. Dardanelles bombardment reported, while German Kiel barracks alleged destroyed by fire. Submarine attacks off Scotland claimed with no confirmed confirmation. German withdrawals on Yser near Ypres described as a turning point with Allied gains emphasized. Kaiser reportedly recovering swiftly.
New York December 12 The Evening Sunday prints a cablegram from former Mexican dictator Victoriano Huerta stating he has never dealt with Carranza Zapata Villa or any associated figures. He denounces a report claiming otherwise and declares he is currently living in Europe in a hospitable country away from Mexican politics.
The Monmouth County Dental Society held its monthly gathering at the Imperial Hotel last night at 8 o'clock, preceded by a banquet. Delegates were briefed on proposed changes in state dental laws by the State Examining Board and instructed for guidance at the upcoming state meeting. Present were Drs Van Dorn Manning Pratt Martin Close Reisner Wooley and Blaisdell.
John ONeill of this city, likely the oldest active boat builder in the state, will celebrate his 88th birthday on March 4. He has built fourteen boats in eight years and is currently crafting an 18 foot Sea Bright dory. He moved from Staten Island eight years ago, previously with Chapman Wrecking Company, and remains in good health aside from sore knees. He has lived alone since his wife’s death in 1900.
John Brown, gardener for Simon Sichel, reports a morning fire at a Bath Avenue rear caretaker cottage facing Dunbar Avenue East of Second Avenue. The blaze, likely from electrical wiring, burned the outside baseboard, rear framework, bathroom on the second floor, kitchen, and spread to the slate roof. Firemen confined it to the south end, estimating damages near $1,500 after removing valuables to safety. piano removed as a precaution.
Monmouth county guests will attend the annual Sophomore Hop at Rutgers College this evening. The event is a social function of New Brunswick College with seven members of the hop committee led by Mellin W W Kittell of Monmouth Beach. James S. George of Rockwell Avenue resigns as Fort Hancock master mechanic to become supervising Inspector at Seabill Manufacturing Co in Waterbury Connecticut. He plans to reside there after January 1 1915 and has long served with the Scovill organization after years at Fort Hancock and a prior five years at Fort Arsenal Philadelphia.
New York December 12 a cheering mob of brokers opened the New York Stock Exchange for the first session since July 80th in vigorous fashion. Prices rose above July 30 closings and trading was the fastest in years. Crowds packed the galleries and floor, confetti flew, and pandemonium marked the opening before order returned with many members in attendance.
Hugh Cammollo of Red Bank was arrested as a material witness in the Lopresto murder inquiry. Bail set at 3000. he was moved to Freehold. An inquest into John Lopresto’s death opened at Red Bank Borough Hall as police hear from associates and await further letters from Canada suggesting family ties.
The Sea Bright Beach Club directors meet and approve a concrete bulkhead with piling extending thirty five feet in front of ocean front property. Jesse A. Howland will perform the work as temporary structures go up. They also discuss purchasing additional land south to extend the bulkhead for protection. Charles Swenson of North Fifth Avenue has a non healing foot wound after stepping on a twenty penny nail causing ongoing pain.
