School Board Must Call Meeting Over Land Purchase Vote

J Brognard Betts, assistant state commissioner of education, ruled the Warren Township Board of Education erred by not calling a meeting of legal voters to rescind a land purchase resolution. The case arose after voters earlier authorized land acquisition and Stoltz refused sale. Betts states majority will is supreme in both approval and defeat of land proposals and orders a meeting to be held under commissioner jurisdiction.

Ivins Wins James Trophy At Riverside Gun Club

Albert J. Ivins wins the J. Frank James trophy with a 192 out of 200 in the final handicap shoot at Riverside Gun Club Shrewsbury Avenue Red Bank. Other finishers include George Gatlo Capt Charles Throckmorton Nelson Deats William Chandler Edward Cooper and Alexander Cooper. The event features 14‑carat gold watch fob prize inscribed RQC with diamond setting.

Clam Bake Season Opens With Plumber Union Outing

The twelfth annual Local Union No. 268 clambake in Newbolds woods featured Long Branch Red Bank and Englewood plumbers. The day included a baseball game among the groups, track events led by Thomas Hayes and Dick Demerest, and a three legged race won by Joseph Van Dyke and Phil Eager.

Fighting 4th Recalls Fourteenth Regiment Mustering Day

Survivors of the Fourteenth Regiment from Freehold gathered at Captain James B. Vredenburghs home to mark the golden jubilee of mustering day on August 26 1862. About 160 to 200 veterans and friends attended as new officers were elected with Sergeant La Rowe named president and W H Foster treasurer. Reverend Dr John Wandley delivered the welcome address and Dr Handleys vivid portrait of the Fighting Fourteenth stirred old memories before a campfire finale.

Fisherman Dies After Hospital Admission

Christopher Thompson 28 a Sea Side Park fisherman died at Monmouth Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon after an appendicitis operation. He came to the hospital two weeks ago for treatment. Philip Chanfrau, a young bathing master, plunged into strong breakers near the Atlantic Hotel to save an elderly man named Konners and his son Edward after they were swept off by a heavy current.
