The Defense Department cites specific Korean War atrocity cases. A Fifth Cavalry platoon was marched for two nights then fired on by North Korean guards, leaving 34 dead and four rescued after capture. Prisoners reportedly confessed to the killings.

A Memphis grand jury will hear whether to indict Joseph L. Stone Jr. for second degree murder in the Oct 19 shooting of Long Beach sailor William Ezra Thacker at the Shelby County penal farm. Thacker, 21, had pleaded guilty to a burglary and was serving 11 months 29 days. The case, submitted by Attorney General John Heiskell, centers on whether the death resulted from a direct hit or a ricochet after Stone says he fired five shots during Thacker’s attempted escape. Renowned American pianist William Kapell, 31, perished when a British Commonwealth DC-6 crashed in fog near San Francisco after transpacific segments from Australia and Honolulu. Coast Guard helicopters reported the wreck in redwood hills, with all aboard killed. names of other victims withheld pending relatives. Kapell, born 1922 in New York, had appeared with the New York Philharmonic and toured extensively in the Americas.
Two workers escaped with minor injuries after a cave-in buried them up to their necks in a 12 foot ditch at Tertian Avenue and Eighth Street during storm drain installation.
