SAN QUENTIN UP John Chauncey Lawrancee 38, Redlands sex killer, died in San Quentin gas chamber at 10 04 am after shouting he was innocent. Convicted of killing his sister's daughter Kathryn Knodel Oct 19 1952 in a sex frenzy the girl was found near Palm Springs. Lawrance accepted fate, spoke with guards, declined meals, and died at 10 12 am.

Man Slain After Stabbing Deputy at Riverside Sheriff Office
AU Bitowe-wo, a soldier, stabbed Deputy Duncan Meyers in the head and neck with scissors in the Riverside sheriff's office. He was shot and killed by another officer. Sheriff Joe Rice identified the suspect as Benjamin Taylor, 23, of San Diego. Meyers remained in serious condition.
