Milk Strike Sparks Fire and Looting at Bronx Garage

A fire damaged the Gold Medal Farms Milk Co. garage in the Bronx as a strike over dairy deliveries left 500 plus in line for milk. Police aided evacuated families while union talks collapsed and mayor Impellitteri warned of police intervention. Separately a hit and run on Ventura Avenue injured a 4 year old girl as witnesses described a dark green sedan with three occupants fleeing the scene.

Communist Naval Cell Uncovered

Ren Velde of the House Un American Activities Committee said a secret Communist cell of at least 13 people had access to Navy Department secrets in World War II. He warned the full expose would be a terrific surprise when told, with five witnesses still to be heard. The inquiry, tied to Morton Sobell and the Rosenbergs, was delayed for security reasons.

Hollywood wife runs car into husband in Torrance

Mrs Ruby Conway 26 allegedly drove at her husband Thomas Conway 22 on Main St and East Rd, knocked him unconscious, and fled into a nearby field. Four witnesses reported the attack. he was hospitalized with serious injuries. Police seek Mrs Conway for suspected hit and run driving and attempted murder.

Redlands Slayer Dies Screaming Innocence Claim

SAN QUENTIN UP John Chauncey Lawrancee 38, Redlands sex killer, died in San Quentin gas chamber at 10 04 am after shouting he was innocent. Convicted of killing his sister's daughter Kathryn Knodel Oct 19 1952 in a sex frenzy the girl was found near Palm Springs. Lawrance accepted fate, spoke with guards, declined meals, and died at 10 12 am.

Rustlers Bag Champ Steer on Car Lot

The grand champion Dorothea's Pride, a 1190 pound Hereford, vanished from a used car lot in Kansas City after Bert Berry paid $6.03 a pound for the animal at the American Royal Livestock Show. Police note missing bolts and bent hardware suggesting a midnight theft.

Girl Gang Beats Up Child and Mother

A 12 year old girl who refused to associate with another student was chased from Stephens Junior High School and severely beaten by a girl gang. The attack prompted repeated police involvement as the victim and her mother were assaulted, with the girl fearing further harm. The write up notes the conflict began after the child refused to befriend the other girl over cigarette purchases and reports the other girl carried knives and weapons.

The United States formally asked the U N General Assembly to place on its agenda charges that Communists in Korea tortured and killed American and Allied captives. Man Slain After Stabbing Deputy at Riverside Sheriff Office

AU Bitowe-wo, a soldier, stabbed Deputy Duncan Meyers in the head and neck with scissors in the Riverside sheriff's office. He was shot and killed by another officer. Sheriff Joe Rice identified the suspect as Benjamin Taylor, 23, of San Diego. Meyers remained in serious condition.

Nobel Prize Awards Otto Schweitzer and George Marshall

Oslo announces Albert Schweitzer and George C. Marshall awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1952 and 1953 respectively. Prize is about $33,000 in cash, chosen by a five member committee from nominated figures and institutions. Schweitzer born January 14, 1875 in Kayserberg. Marshall born December 32, 1880 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

Till Death Clause In Vows Fulfilled In Court

In Boerne Texas a 5year old Boerne woman died of a heart attack in the arms of her estranged husband during a court appearance. Mrs Ida B Perner sat on the back row as Charles Perner testified to their seven year marriage. When Mrs Perner suffered the attack he rushed to aid her and she was pronounced dead.
