Senate tax squeeze rumors rock California budget battle
In Sacramento March 28 UPI reports a fierce clash over California’s budget as senators deny conspiring in a secret meeting to kill 109 million dollars in Assembly tax relief. The Senate slashed the Assembly budget by 54 million dollars, proposing a 1,181,257,224 dollar appropriation and a 10 million dollar down payment for a Central Valley Project purchase while delaying the Assembly program. Assemblyman Jonathan Hellibaugh blasts the move as a likely death blow to tax cuts as the session nears its Tuesday midnight deadline. Senate members cite the need to know spending before lowering revenue by 109 million, and the education panel approves a 40 million dollar school loan program.
