Hope of Lower State Tax Gains Slightly in Legislature
SACRAMENTO March 5 The legislature shows faint optimism for a one year sales and personal income tax cut amid Gov Warren opposition. Assemblyman Julian Beck reports a majority of Democrats favor tax trimming while Republican Harold Levering seeks a strong economy bloc. Proposals include lowering sales tax to 2.44 percent, raising personal exemption by 1000 dollars, and broader plans touching bank, franchise, and corporate taxes with a 109 million annual cost. Warren warns of tax losses threatening state stability and recalls a 125 million school bond payment. Sen Earl Desmond proposes a 2.5 percent sale tax and 500 increase in exemption. Levering seeks federal tax limits to 25 percent of income. many states back constitutional convention on tax limits, but California previously blocked similar resolutions.
